88 jeep wrangler questions

Hey guys, thanks for having me! I have a few quick tyranny questions on my jeep, first the back story.

1988 jeep wrangler 4.2 258

It currently has a manual 4 speed with over drive, im not sure which specifically.

I want to switch to an automatic ...so...
Which tranny do I need to make it happen? Do I have to replace the T.C. as well?

Or lets say we we stay with an manual,

Will the ax-15 fit my 4.2? Everything I have found so far says just the 4.0?

I am planning to replace the tranny soon,

What trans does it have now? 4 speed does not sound right? in 88 for the 4.2 would have been left over BA-10 5 spd or newer AX-15 5spd. Novack and advance adapters can help you out on the the parts you would need. T-case should be np231, unless you have the carry over np205(?). Might have to change input gear.

First off, yes 5 speed, sorry!
Are there markings on the tranny that will tell me which tranny it is?
Also I want to change to an exterior slave cylinder, is the ax the best to do that with?

Here is a link to a BA-10:
Peuget BA10 Manual / Standard Transmission Parts and Diagram

For ax-15 external slave 1994 and up as i recall.. ax-15 is good trans, not sure what all is needed for swap though.

If you swap to an AX-15 you will have to get a 23 spline input transfer case too as the case you have now is a 21 spline. If you want to swap to auto you need a 904...where you located? I have one with a case on it read to go.

How's it run on the freeway? I do mostly daily driver type street driving, but the weekend trips into the dirt sometimes require 100-200 mile trips. Would the 904 be the best option?
