'93 Jeep Wrangler 4 cylinder timing chain

My '93 Jeep Wrangler 4 cylinder has been running terrible. Missing badly. Changed plugs, wires, distributor and finally let my mechanic take a look. He has had the Jeep and was stumped for several days, checking all of the same stuff. Finally, he determined it was the timing chain. Repair will be $600-700 or more.

I have changed many of the parts including alternator, water pump, thermostat, belts, fan, etx. I consider myself semi-competent working on vehicles, and the 4 cylinder seems very straightforward. However, I have never changed a timing chain. Is the timing chain something I can handle? What are the pitfalls?

Knowledgeable advice and experience would be appreciated.

Welcome!

If it runs crappy all the time w/no chance of running good it could be that but it could also be several other things like bad valves or even bad terminal connections at the battery causing loss of voltage to the throttle body periodically. I've seen a bad coil ground do that as well...
