About to be TJ owner.. but engine noise is making me wonder.. need help

So first off, I would like to say hi and I'm really excited to be part of this forum. I live in the Central Valley in California and I'm about to buy my first Wrangler, its a white 98 Sahara with 146k on the clock. the thing pulls like no other, but my ONLY concern is a noise that the engine makes while driving, its like a low chatter that speeds up with the RPMs. now i ran it for a little, and it does overheat, rpms dont jump, and while still it doesnt make the noise, only while running. the guy has owned it for about 4 years and he said that its always been like that, then he said he took it to a dealership and they told him that the 4.0's had this common problem and that its nothing he can fix, that its just the way the 4.0's sound... is this a common problem? what can it be? i need your help guys, I'm supposed to buy tomorrow about 4pm, but i dont want to get suckered... help me guys, thanks.

If it overheats and has a clatter, don't walk RUN the other way.
No the 4.0 does NOT have a constant clatter and overheating is an issue that may have caused any number of major problems in the engine.

You said you're in the central valley... I'm gonna PM you with some info.

Welcome! What do you call overheating? Because my normal operating temp is 210!

the gut said that it has never overheated, but then again I guess one would say what he needs to in order to sell an item no longer wanted by that person

Did you get my PM ?

I'd definitely have it checked out by someone who knows Jeeps.
I'm not sure what you meant when you said that it "pulls like no other" if you mean that it runs strong or it pulls from one side of the road to another. If it's pulling to one side, that's another issue.

If you have a fat wallet that you can throw at it then you'll be OK and will eventually be able to straighten it all out but if you're like most of us and are living on a budget, I'd pass on this one and keep looking unless it's a steal of a deal. There are a TON of Jeeps out there, you don't have to settle for one that's got a bunch of problems.

I think you made a wise decision. Too many things that were "iffy"

Where are you located?
