My first ever forum so please forgive any newb missteps.
Did much reading in archives prior to buying.
Ordered on 4/29/12: Unlimited Rubicon, 6spd, 4.10, silver, dualtops, connectivity, air bags, heated seats.
Waiting patiently for factory to build. Periodically checking status on Jeep.com/vots.
Upgrading from my trusted but aging '96 RAV4 2dr 5spd AWD.
Previously owned '87 Wrangler.
My other jeep is a 2 wheeler- '96 KLR 650.
Chose new Jeep based on combination of fun/utility and personal needs/tastes. Short list included Xterra, FJ-40, Tacoma, and WRX-STI.
Don't plan hardcore offroading or rockcrawling, but love to play on trails when an opportunity arises. Mostly, I need a reliable fun vehicle to get to work year round during days and nights, with frequent drives between long island NY and Poconos in PA. Main family ride is an Odyssey, but everyone wants to ride in the Jeep. Originally I wanted a 2 door, but my wife and 3 kids convinced me to get a 4 Dr, but also "letting" me move up to a Rubicon.
Trying to be sensible about mods. Mostly would like to get better fuel efficiency and on road performance. In case you wonder why Rubicon vs Sahara or Sport- mostly visceral decision but also wanted the lower axle ratio, heated seats, and the price was not that much higher than Sahara.
Please allow me to pick your brains for some advice:
Rubicon stock tires no good for winter. Would like to stay close to stock diameter and width. Not sure about lifts, wheel spacers, or backspacing.
Need help with following choices:
A. Get year round all season tires (I can hear some of you laughing With disgust).
Michelin Latitude Tour/ GY Wrangler SR-A: both same size as stock.
Michelin LTX MS2: 265/75/16 (diam 31.7" width 10.5") or 265/70/17 (31.7 x 10.7).
B. Keep stock tires for summer and get dedicated winter tires.
Continental or General in 235/85/16 (31.7 x 9.2)
C. Get Duratracs
33x10.5R15- would need lift/spacers?
265/76/16 or 265/70/17 with C load rating. Diam 31.7" width 10.7".
*Anyone have experience with Cragar wheels for the jeep? I see them on Cragar website but not on Tire Rack or Discount Tire.
2. Cold air intake/exhaust/chip. Very emotional topic with lots of seat of the pants Dynos. Any evidence based advice re brands and power/MPG gains would be appreciated. The cool sound would help drown out the laughter over the all season tires.
3. Any updates re rear view cameras? I did not get the fancy media/GPS options.
4. I plan to keep the Jeep for a long time and don't want to share it with bad guys. Any suggestions for security measures beyond the factory alarm?
Thanks for your attention.
