I have been lurking here for a while and decided to sign up and say hi, So Hi.
I have a 04 yellow SE 90,000 and no mods yet. I have replaced the soft top and the blown speakers.
This is my everyday vehicle but my part time work is why I bought this, I photograph nature and wildlife and need something dependable for light trails.
Some more security. I need to be able to lock some things up when I am away from the vehicle on a trail and other places. It has a instatrunk that works good but I see some Tuffy items coming soon.
Lights, like previous jeeps I have owned the lights suck. I am adding fog lights and a set on the hood or the lower windshield haven't decided were just yet. but I usually go in well before sunrise or come out after sunset and the extra light is helpful from past experience with light and now without.
A roof rack for my canoe and a rear rack for a cooler and misc. items.
The 2 items for up for debate are the winch and tires/lift. I think a winch would not be used to much but it may be worth the money to have one, it may save my ass one day since I am mostly alone (oh yeah a CB to). Also I did not intend on getting a lift since I have the 2.4L and the changing of the gears. The more I have thought about it, the addiction is setting in, I was thinking last would be a 2inch lift with 30's and 4.56 gears.
Now I hope I don't disappoint to many with my plans since I am not building a monster, I am building this to meet my needs and the jeep straight out of the box almost suites them all. Who knows down the line when it is paid off I can get a gas saver and go all out.
Anyway I think I have read about every post in the last month and it is some great stuff. My favorite is the Does and Don't thread. If your ever around the Jacksonville Al area off roading let me know I may not be able to do what your doing but love taking photo's. I know there is a off road park about 10 minutes from me so may start out there.
Hey guys! I am in Trussville. Is Grey rock in Mount Olive? What are the trails like? My jeep is a 2001 w/ 4.0L and manual. It has a 3" body lift and 32 11.50 BFG AT's. Is it (Grey Rock) good for families? Thanks for your input.
Gray Rock is in Mount Olive, and its family friendly. It gets a little rowdy after dark sometimes, but my wife and I go and everyone is pretty nice. There are always some kids riding with their parents. My jeep has a 3" spring lift and 1" BL on 32s and there are plenty of places for me to ride. Lately they have been getting together a "small tire ride" at most events. Its a great way to get to know other wheelers and ride without fear of getting lost or running up on an obstacle that you cant handle. There is plenty of help if you get stuck. I have pulled people out and have been pulled out. Its all part of the fun.
If you like to camp, you'll like it there. No hook-ups, bring what you need. There are plenty of porta-potties if you are in a tent. The dust is EPIC...pick your campsite wisely.
You can go in and out at will so you can eat out if you like. A couple of rules are good to know...keep your seatbelt on...all the time, and no littering. Its a big place and you would be surprised at how clean it stays...even cig butts are picked up.
Thanks ccrane2299! Are there scheduled events there or is it come as you please? I do like to camp but mostly it would be a couple hours at a time. It is short ride for me. I am sure I have crossed paths with Grey Rock. I used to ride 4 wheelers over in Mount Olive (power line trails) alot a few years back before I had kids. Used to be able to go from Palmerdale to Mont Olive through the woods (about 20 miles). Anyway, I have been offroad a few times but nothing too extreme sine I bought the Jeep. Any info would be appreciated!
