Avoiding mistakes

Hello all!
Been reading these forums for a while in anticipation of purchasing a used jeep.
Waiting for bonus to come in to pull the trigger
As I will only be spending about 8 thousand will have to make some compromises to be sure. Trying to decide where those should be... Been looking lately at wranglers from the 1998-2006 year area.
My concern is what specifically is a good thing to look for as far as model setup.
Is the dana 44 axle really important if mostly mild offroading and lots of street are the main uses for the Jeep?
I would ask about the engine but have read enough to get the 4 liter for sure.
Anything else I should look specifically for other than rust and leaks
One of my other unknowns is whether it is worth it to pay more for a newer year model or if they changed minimally between the years.

Thanks for reading this and hope to talk lots more as I get a jeep and start upgrading.

I'd get a used stock jeep for cheap and customize it on your own. Some that are already tricked out have been beaten up on trails unless it's all for show. Also people price their jeep unreasonably bc they have so much money invested that doesn't add value. And its always fun to trick it out yourself. Good luck. I'm sure you'll be happy with whatever you find.

Also. When ur looking at jeeps make sure all of the paint matches and maybe bring a magnet to make sure it's all metal and not bondoed up too much. Some dealerships will try to cover up past accidents as cheaply as possible. If there is a carfax available that's always a plus too. If its a legit dealer they often will have one.

Personally, if I were to do it all over again. I would keep my eye out for a good used Rubicon. It will already have alot of the upgrades you will eventually want, even for mild trail riding.
