Brand new to Jeep - Confused by hard top/soft top

Hi everyone

I'm brand new to the Jeep community and I've just bought my first Jeep. It's a 2009 Wrangler Sport JK. I'm confused by the difference between hard top and soft top. To me, the model is a hard top and the hard top can be physically removed. However, the dealership described it as a softtop. When I look back at the ad, it says hard top/soft top. Which doesn't help me much! So - is it possible to remove the hard top and then attach a soft top? Can the soft top be bought as an accessory?

I don't mind it being a hard top, but feel that a soft top might be more secure when I want to park the car for any length of time.

Any help would be really appreciated!

Am loving it so far! Owning a Jeep has been a dream of mine since I was 16!

Actually, Helen, it's the hard top that is more secure...if you're talking about protection against break-in, etc.

The soft top, however, is more FUN. Driving with the soft top down and/or doors off in warm weather is...well, one of the big appeals to owning a Jeep.

But don't take my word for it. Throw your question out to the masses in the main forum and you'll get plenty of responses.

Welcome!

I agree. The soft top is what I have and is definitely more fun when you can take it down, plus much easier to have on and off than the hard top. However it's whatever works best for you! Welcome to the WF and congrats on your new Jeep! Don't forget to wave!

is the soft top still attached under the hard top? If so, you should get some help and go with either/or and put the other in storage... not good to have em both on at the same time...

First, Welcome to the forum.

The hard top is just that. A hard shell top with glass windows. The soft top will be fabric with plastic zippered windows. When your Jeep was new, it was probably shipped and delivered with both tops. The frame attached underneath the hard top and the canvas packaged. Since the dealer listed it as hard top/soft top, you should have received both when you purchased it. I would contact the dealer to see if they forgot to include it or if they were just giving you the option of either/or.
