I'm not a first-time Jeep owner (84 CJ-7, 79 CJ-5, 87 XJ) but this is the first rig I plan to have for the long haul. I've done the basics and am ready to make it more capable, so now I'm doing my research on lockers and the debate on whether to regear my D30/35 (3.73) or upgrade my axles.
The 285/75r16 BFG A/T's I'm currently running are the classic commuter compromise. Now that I own one of those little things....little engine....good gas mileage....yes, I bought a car....I can think bigger, and plan to.
I'll dig into the Forum to try to find threads on this topic - I'm sure they're out there - but I'd also welcome any responses!
I'm doing mostly local, backwoods trails. I'm not looking to break any records at this point. I'll be upgrading to either 33 or 35 x 12.50 M/T's as soon as these BFG's are slicked. I know I've got the room but I feel like 4.88's would be a better match for 35's.
All in all, I'm looking to make functional improvements without making huge investments (shocking, I know!).
Thanks in advance for any input!
