Exclamation Dana 35 broken in 2000 Wrangler Sport

I just bought my son a 2000 wrangler sport as his first vehicle. It has a 128K miles and seems relatively clean. The lady we bought it from used for daily commute no off roading. As my son was learning to drive the stick shift we heard a clunk and lost the differential. He was doing well and was not too hard on it. I believe it is a Dana 35 with a 3.73 gear ratio. I took it to a mechanic today and he said it will cost me $2,200 to have him rebuild it or I could pay him $1,900 to put a used axle from a salvage yard in its place with the same Dana 35. Who knows how long this would last? Do these prices sound right? Are their other options? I am not a strong mechanic but wonder if I could replace the axle or even rebuild the differential myself? I am really disappointed to have to spend this much after having the jeep for one day. If I do have to spend $2K on the rear should I consider a different differential like the Dana 44? But then need to replace front too doubling my cost? Any thoughts appreciated...

2k seems overpriced to me whether you rebuild it or drop in a used one. I've seen plenty on Craigslist for 300 -400 drum to drum with the parking cables and everything some even with a locker installed. Also replacing the Dana 35 on a jeep is a pretty simple job in my opinion.

Yes. I got my 8.8 from ECGS, and with an ARB locker it was $2400 delivered to my door. You could get one with an open carrier or Detroit Trutrac for even less. Upgrade!

If you just looking to get it back on the road, try looking on craigslist or car-parts.com for local salvage yards in your area. A used dana 35 should be no more than a few hundred. It will bolt in. You will need to make sure the gears in the replacement axle match the front axle. There should be a metal tag on the diff that tells you what gears you have.

If you want to upgrade to a dana 44, those go used for 1000-1500 depending on your location.

I am shopping around for a cheap Dana 35 to get back on the road. I did learn that I can have differential rebuilt parts and labor for $700-$800. Much better than the first mechanic. I am also keeping my eye out for Dans 44.
