Engine swap question

Hi all- Newbie here.
Just a question. I have a '91 Wrangler that has a newly rebuilt Ax5 trans and a newly rebuilt N231 x-fer case. However, the 4cylinder is kinda tired. I recently got a great deal on an '89 Cherokee with a strong 4.0 in it with an antomatic in it.
Can anyone direct me to a place where I can get detailed info as to what I will need to do to put the 4.0 into my wrangler. I'm a welder by trade so relocating motor mounts aren't a problem. Also, will the 4.0 bolt right up to my trans or will I need an adapter. Lastly, is my trans and x-fer case strong enough to handle the extra torqure from the 4.0?

I have the NV3550 5 speed in my '00, but I have the same (231) trasfer case. If I'm not mistaken (possible) the AX-5 will bolt right up to the 4.0. Putting the 4,0 in there is going to be a pita though.

The 87-95 Wranglers are like ours... If you need any pics of how our 4.0 fits, just ask You can search for other conversions as well.

I would start by making a list of everything you can find that is the same -vs- everything that is different. Your on the right track, find out the big stuff first. If you need to weld anything at all, it would be mounts...

Do you have other parts from the 4.0? Such as radiator? Alternator? Exhaust manifold? etc... It would make it a much easier swap to use as much as you can from the 4.0.

And... Welcome to the forum!
