Hey there. I'm posting this "New Guy" thread, as instructed.
My name is James, I live in SoCal. I don't own a Jeep (yet). I have offroaded in some capacity since I was a toddler in the back of my dad's VW dune buggy 35 years ago.
Since then, I've gone through desert dirt bike riding, ATC's, ATV's, motocross, an off-road golf-cart (the most exciting roll-over is when you're on a bench seat with no seat belt
), 4x4 diesel truck, and a side-by-side. I also have a pontoon boat. I'm a toy-a-holic.
Currently, I mainly play in the sand on my slightly (yes, that's sarcastic) modified '07 Yamaha Raptor 700. I'm officially too old for my motocross bike.
I have a 4 year old son, and a wife who used to ride with me. She doesn't want a side-by-side or a sand rail, because she's afraid she'll hurt our kid. She is, however, interested in doing some wheeling in the local mountains (near Lake Arrowhead, Big Bear, etc). I'm hoping to find a mildly priced Wrangler ('91 or newer, because carbeurators are the Devil) that we can do that in, as well as she can use in the desert for some very light sand-duning (ie: staying on the flats with the 4 year old & a cooler, while I try to kill myself).
I've been doing some reading & researching, and am (I think) ready to look at a few rides. I'm not looking for an extreme-duty rig, nor anything that is all dressed up but never been in the dirt. I just want a capable off-road ride that is "nice" enough for the wife to be seen in.
If history serves, once I get something, the fun will begin and I will begin sinking thousands of dollars into aftermarket mods . . . until the wife notices all the boxes that the UPS man is dropping off and asks how much I'm spending.
