First-time Jeep buyer. Could use some moral support

Hey there guys,
In the process of finding/buying my first jeep. Looking for a YJ with non-critical work needed. I'd love to put work into it when I get it, but I still need it to get me to work. I've been looking since January. I feel like I must have checked out every YJ in Texas!

Anyway, I've been running into some very rude sellers. They're always great over text. Until I call. I guess they don't want to sell their beloved jeep to a girl who they think won't appreciate it.

I recently ran into a seller who told me, when I asked if I could take it to a mechanic, that that would be overkill for a jeep and if I couldn't evaluate it myself, I didn't deserve to buy it.

I would love to get some thoughts on that opinion. Am I being too picky?

Well. I look forward to hearing from y'all!

First of all welcome to the forum!!

As far as your hunt is going, if people are going to be like that and tell you things then take your money elsewhere and let them sit on it. Who cares...

There are way to many jeeps out there for people to be like that. As far as taking it to a mechanic... If its clean and appears to be taken care of and its not lifted and all that its probably okay to forego the mechanic check out. Major things you need to watch out for are rust. You want to check the frame pretty good and any rust thats there, just make sure its surface rust. Push on it a little but dont run your finger through it.

I dont think your being to picky but you have to know that these old wranglers are pretty rock solid. You really have to abuse them and never change to oil for them to have major issues. Most stuff is relatively simple to fix and not to expensive. Just be patient and keep looking. Good luck

Sounds to me like you are doing everything right. If they don't want to let you have it professionally checked, they are probably trying to hide something. Just keep in mind, it will be awfully hard to find a 20 year old Jeep in perfect condition. In the end, you may just have to decide what you are willing to live with and/or can fix.

Because this is the newbie check-in area, you may not get the answers you are looking for. I suggest you check out this forum area and post your questions there, I think you'll get a better response.

Wranglin4Life, thanks for the advice! A lot of the jeeps I've looked at already have a lift on them. So I mainly want to have someone else check and see if that was done right and it has the proper gearing and driveshaft to go with the lift. I've done a lot of research, but I'm not confident that I would be able to verify that . . .yet.

Beastmaster, That is a good point that they may be hiding something if they aren't willing to get it looked at.

I'll definitely repost in the YJ forum. I didn't want anyone getting mad at me for asking noob questions on a non-noob forum. = )

I'm looking forward to putting a lot of work into the jeep. Just as long as I don't end up with a surprise that's going to cost me thousands.
