G'day Mate

G'day from Oz,

Been driving and competing to Jeeps for a few years now and I only just stumbled across your site. Haven't had a chance to look over it fully, but I will do when I get back from competing this weekend. You must have lots of useful SWB Jeep information. Drop by the Aussie site www.ausjeepoffroad.com sometime and have a look at how we do it downunder.

Cheers
Andy..

Welcome to the site! What kind of competition are you involved in? Rock Crawling, Camel Trophy, Road Rally...? Good luck this weekend, and bring back pictures to post!

When I get back, will be leaving in about an hour from now. It is a short course all terrain comp. Very close to rock crawling. Sort a good stepping stone before doing the WERock series.

Nice, welcome aboard boss. I was stoked to see that our little site had a couple new members from other continents. Good luck with your run this weekend.

Also not to sound dumb, but is that the same WERock series that is in the states?

Yep, sure is. Cant think of his name (Rich???), but one of the organisers from over there is here at the moment to watch the next round in a couple of weekends time. Apparently the winners from our series will be flown over there for your finals next year, or something like that. Check out http://www.outerlimits4x4.com/PHP_Modules/phpBB2/ for more information and picks of what is going on at the moment. We have a very sweet TJ competing in it called the firetruck and we will have a CJ7 based buggy soon.

Right on boss. The more the merrier.

So I would imagine that you boys in Australia would have some pretty decent rock crawling (outside of the competitions). Am I right? Also do you face any land use issues from environmentalists (eco-terrorists)?

Im only fairly new to the 4x4 scene.. so Im not upto scratch with all the cool places.. but there are rocks about..
and we are constantly losing places to drive because ot the greenies.. fair enough they got a right to speak thier mind.. but I dont push my beliefs on them..
In Queensland we are fortunate as there are plenty of 4x4 parks within a few hours drive..catering to all abilities.. from easy to crazy

If you boys need any help with letters/emails written on your land issues to your government. Just let us know? We face these issues on a daily basis.

we have a fair bit of crown land owned by the government which is generally good to drive on......providing ya don't get found.

but what we have is a ever increasing number of 4WD parking opening up. these are open to the local comp scene and often have decent camping facilities too. some now are as close to an house drive from some CBD's.

Our main problem we are facing at the moment is an attack on any lifted 4x4s. The Police and Mainroads are trying to get them taken off the road.

Pardon my ignorance. What's a Mainroad?

The transport Department, basically the ones that decide if your vehicle is road worthy or not.

PS, have a look at my vids in the event section

Yeah, some of the states here have that same problem. They have laws about bumper height and tire size that drag them down.

We are pretty lucky in that regard here in Arizona because Off Highway Vehicle revenue is about 4 billion dollars a year in the state. So they don't mess much with the vehicle itself. But we do have to fight like hell to keep our trails open.

this is just my opinion......but the government used to get a lot of revenue from speed camers (set up to catch out speeders - take a pic......send a fine with a nice photo...that sort of thing)

However they have been caught out with faulty equipment too many times and now we (if caught) can take the fine to court to question it and the use, set up and accuracy of the equipment.....most times it will fall in our favour and the police and government no longer get our money.

Because of the loss on revenue there has been a crackdown on any modified vehicle, ricers and 4x4's alike to get some extra money back off the taxpayer. currently 4x4's are being an easy and an increasing more frequent target due to the local media's hype over 4x4's in general. It seems that if you drive a 4x4 you are the type on person that will / do:
1. drive over a small child some time in your life or likley to kill someone with you bullbar in the city traffic.
2. not care for the environment because of the bit motor you may have in your vehicle.
3. are directly responcible for the increased fuel prices
4. cause traffic accidents because the impatient people behind you may have to swerve out blindly from behind you cause your too big.
5. blah, blah, blah.

Anyway since the 4x4 has a bad name in the general people eyes it seems that the government has to be seen doing something about the problem....they issue defect notices to 4x4 so that they can call you in to their garages to get your 4x4 checked if it passes with their rules (only a 2" lift is acceptable in ther eyes). and you have to pay for the whole thing generating two positives for them.

1. revenue
2. keeping the media relient sheep happy.

This is why some people have been defected for not having appropiate sized mudflaps...if any.
