Smile Going to buy a Wrangler

Hi All,

My name is Steve Hopkins, I am new to this forum and the Jeep world. I am going to be buying a Wrangler soon and I wanted to ask some people in the know a question about Engines. I will be using the Jeep for a second vehicle and to get back and forth to work on bad snowy days (40 miles). So I won't be using it heavily or as a daily driver. I am looking at a Wrangler with 111K miles on a 2.5L Fuel injected engine. Is there any good, bad or ugly on this engine with 111K miles. I have no Idea. Opinions are welcome.

Thank you

Steve Hopkins

That engine is a good solid motor, AS long as it was taken care of like any engine. For Highway driving it is a little underpowered, but since you are not using it as a DD you should be fine. If you use it for wheeling at all The 2.5 has plenty of power, Just not the speed for Highway.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds encouraging. When you say no speed for highway driving,------ Will it do 65 or 70 on the interstate. I know the passing power won't be there but can it cruise at those speeds if the motor is solid?

If all you can find is a 2.5 then go with that but I would shoot for a 4.0L. It has the extra kick in the pants that you prolly will want.

^^I'm going to agree with this guy.

Get one with the 4.0

The reason I suggest the 4.0 Is even with my 4.0 I do "ok" not great but "ok" on the highway. Even then I still wish I had more power for highway use. Passing vehicles on a scale of 1 being horrible to 10 being outstanding I would rate my 4.0L being a 6-7 at most. Passing two, or three vehicles fast? Forget about it.

I'm sure if I stuck my engine in my mustangs body it wouldn't be a issue but with the way the jeep is designed it's just a brick in the wind.

The way the Wrangler is designed it helps to have the extra power. From what iv heard and read the 4.0L gets about same MPG as a 2.5L anyway so why not just go with the 4.0L and get the extra oomph and bang for your buck.

Thanks for the info. I am sure I have a lot to learn about owning a jeep. Does anyone have any ideas on average price ranges for a 4.0, 5 speed, 91-93 with 80k-120K miles. I've seen quite a range but what something is worth and what someone wants for it are two different things.

Look up the blue book value of what your looking for and go from there. Figure out what mods it has and add that to the price. I paid a lil over the blue book value for mine because of the good condition and all the tops it came with.

Bone stock and good condition you'll probably be looking at 5-8k depending on your area as it changes a lot and no jeep is the same. It really varies from vehicle to vehicle.

On a side note

If the Jeep you decide to purchase has Goodyear Wrangler tires like most do. Budget in a new set of tires if you can. Mine are solid on dry pavement but with Missouri/Illinois weather they have a hard time dealing with Wet/Snowier pavement from my experience of living in Missouri.

Hey Welcome aboard.
If you're gonna do interstate with it, I gotta go with the 4.0L guys on this one--if you have a choice.

Thanks agphotosnatj,
That seems to be a pretty common thread here. I am leaning toward the 4.0 after I have read the info from jeep owners. I will be making some more calls tomarrow.
