Got a 99 Jeep Wranger SE Yesterday

My first Jeep. Always wanted one. Folks on the Mercedes Benz forum probably think I am nuts, I traded my 95 MB SL500 for the Jeep. And now I readily confess I know nothing about them. Was suprised to read in the manual about "temporary" 4 wheel drive.

This is my Jeep (so far):

Glad to be here, want to learn EVERYTHING. LOL

Ask away ...

Well, I have been reading the old threads. Perhaps I should have done that BEFORE I bought a Jeep! Now I find I only need to spend another $3k for better upper half doors and a hard top. (and I am sure that is only just getting started).

Don't exactly have to have a hard top. You are in cali? Enjoy the soft top!

Ah, first question

Saw in one of the threads about folding down the soft top ... can you fold down the soft top without having to unzip the back windows? (is that a stupid question?) Took me 45 minutes to put it together yesterday (the first time). Got it in 20 minutes tonight.

You will get it down to about 5 mins in the dark after awhile. Just a tip, add tip ties to the window zippers so you don't rub the hide off your knuckles. You can but I remove all the windows out of habit...

Welcome to the forum. You'll love the soft top. My last Jeep was a hard top with full doors. I went soft top with half doors this time around and wouldn't change now. I'm also in California down toward Fresno so I do the top off thing on a regular basis.

Thanks everyone. Am I going to change my mind and start liking these half doors? I found on prior vehicles that what I thought I wanted to do with it when I got it changed over time. Going into this purchase, I had my mind set on finding one with a hardtop and full doors -- and then of course what I found was a soft-top with half doors. I have been browsing for full doors, and have looked at those solid fiberglass upper doors as an option. But Ironman says he loves his half doors and wouldn't change. Curious, does everybody love their half doors? I had seriously thought about trying to find someone who wanted half doors and trying to do a swap, will I find in the end that the half doors are better (more fun?). Opinions?

Half doors are great when the upper half is out, not so great when it's in. I found that even w/ the glass slider upper halfs that they still weren't the greatest (long story). Ideally, I'd have both. Half doors for summer and full doors for winter. But for now I prefer the full doors for winter and just go doorless all summer. (haven't had any on since March).

Mine came with full and half doors and I run more with the full doors then I do half doors. If you commute a lot on the highway the uppers tend to not seal right and they will flap. I love them for the summer when you are cruising around.

Welcome and congrats on your new jeep. I'm with ironman, I've got half doors w/ a soft top and I love mine too. Why don't you keep the half doors for a while and see if you end up liking them more than you thought you would?

Personally I like my full doors. If you want a little bit of air you can just roll them down or take them out.

One thing I did to help the upper door halves seal real tight in the winter is put a thin weather strip on the plastic door jam that the upper door half's fit up against. Also a good tip when your driving around to keep the noise down is to have the air vent fan on low. It will create a little air pressure in the cab and keep the windows all the way around tighter. I have always loved how the half doors make a good arm rest when driving around. Use them for awhile. I think you will really like them after awhile.
