Hello from Mass

Hello All,

My name is Alan. This is my first post. I have been enamored with wranglers my whole life and finally am deciding to pursue getting one. Unfortunately I have run into the issue of money and talent. I dont have the money for my lack on mechanical experience and talent. So with that said I will keep searching. In the mean time I am trying to sponge up as much information as possible on late 80s and early 90s wranglers. Feel free to say hello and any advice is greatly appreciated. I am apparently looking for a white whale but see below what i hope to accomplish.

Me: 6'4" and not thin
Would like a. 6 cyl
Realistically can't handle body work more than surface rust.
Would like to know what to avoid. YouTube will be my mechanic, I am completely green.
Year not important other than can I keep it going.
Will need it to handle the highway, doesn't need to be graceful but doable.
Live in northeast.
Want to hit trails in Maine, nothing crazy but more than my Subaru can handle.

Thanks all!

Because this is the newbie check-in area, you may not get the answers you are looking for. I suggest you check out this forum area and post your questions there, I think you'll get a better response.

Welcome from the western half of the state! While there are plenty of YJ's around, watch out for frame rust. Most if not every YJ I've seen has frame rust to some degree of severity or another. TJ's aren't much better as far as rust, just be sure to check the back of the frame and where the skid plate underneath is thoroughly before buying anything. The YJ's tend to rust out where the rear leaf spring hangers are on the frame, so watch for that area too.
