Hey all! New to the forums, because I'm thinking about buying a JK. I live in Queens, just outside of New York City. Because of living in the city, I haven't owned a car in about 6 years but recently moved into a place with parking. (yay!)
Always wanted a Wrangler. I'm definitely the tinkerer type. I figure it would be a good option for NYC since it's easy to parallel park because of the short wheelbase and overhang (right?), doesn't need to be garaged, and is rubber all around so don't need to worry so much about dings. But, I'd love some feedback on what to look out for (common rust spots, unreliable options, weak spots for thieves, etc.) and what other resources are out there.
I'm thinking about buying from a dealership just so I can have a warranty for a little while. This make sense or better buying private?
The Jeep would be parked probably 6 days out of the week, outside but in a locked lot. (Daily commute is via train station in walking distance.) Driving would be on weekends to see family/friends and for chores. (And maybe a little mudding!) What should I do to keep it in good shape if not daily driven?
Any automatic/manual battles I should know about?
I'd love own a stick again but don't know if it's worth it, especially when offroading where a torque converter can be advantageous. Any major maintenance or mileage differences?
Any thoughts on how to best handle insurance?
Total unashamed noob question: Does every JK come with a hard and soft top or do you need to purchase the soft? And if so, I should expect any seller to have both?
Appreciate anything you can offer. I'm off to scour other similar posts. When I had my last car (Nissan 240sx) I found the forum community to be a fantastic resource for everything. Hope this works out and I can give something back to the community!
