help buying new/used jeep

Hello and thanks in advanced to all you long time jeep lovers! I've just discovered that wranglers run true to my heart. you can do what you want to me but you'll never leave me broken down and stranded; were tough, sexy and let nothing get in our way.
I've been doin ALOT of research and know I dont want an SE as they are 4 cyc bare bones models. I"m looking for 97 newer for 10k or less.
East coast my whole life but feel the west coast callin out. I will need a jeep that can handle the North West coast geography and handle the challenges getting thru winter storms.
Any information would be helpfull in reguards to series, modifications good/bad and warning signs to avoid major repair bills.
Should I go for a DANA 35 or 44, manual/automatic, lifted or not ? things like that.
Thanks again cant wait to hit the road TOPLESS!!!

Welcome aboard. A lot of the questions you asked have already been answered (by folks more knowledgrable than myself).

That said, here's my answers:

DANA 35 or 44: Neither. Source yourself a nice low mileage D2 Ford 8.8 Rear end out of a 95+ Explorer. The D2 version has 4.10 gears and Posi so it should be a good fit for lots of power and abuse.

manual/automatic: Your preference. I like the manual better. Haven't driven an automatic in years.

lifted or not: Preference. I'm going Spring Over Axle on my YJ.

Thanks for your reply. It's helpfull to get an owners preferrence with how they use it. I will look further about ford 8.8 vs Dana since I will be exploring tougher terrains. Thanks again
