Unhappy Help me!

Hey guys, my name's Jim and I recently purchased a '97 TJ. Just about an hour ago I put it into 4 wheel high (not the first time) and when I let up on the clutch all I heard was a hellacious grind from the transfer case. 2 high works fine as does 4 low. If I ease the trans. case lever the slightest bit back towards 2 high it'll engage and drive, but I'm wary. If I pull the lever all the way back to 4 high (where it stops moving backwards befrore the neutral position) it just grinds when I let off the clutch. What the hell is going on? It was working fine last weekend.

I'd appreciate any help I can get. gilliganshat@yahoo.com
Thanks,
Jim (Caveman)

Grind me a pound too.....

Yep, had the same thing happen last week too only better. I was driving up a very muddy incline (about 30 degrees) when the 4 low dumped out on me for no apparent reason. Perhaps I accidently hit the lever and disengaged it?

So there I am half way up the hill, no 4wd and I'm sliding backwards and going sideways down the hill in the mud. It was a little hairy since the trail was narrow and going over the sides was not a good option. To further complicate the matter, my neighbor had his Sahara on my back bumper going up the trail...

I managed to backed it up, put the trans in neutral and put the transfer case in 4H...drove a few yards and it was OK. I backed up and then did the same thing and put it in 4L. The problem went away.....Go figure?
