Big Bend was incredible! Richard, our Art Director, and myself were there for 3 days and had a blast. The first portion of our trip was spent on several four-wheel trails including the Old Ore Road (home to a recent gravesite that freaked us out since it was only 100 yards from where we planned to camp the first night), River Road, Black Gap Trail, and Glenn Springs Road. All these trails are very easy with the Black Gap Trail being easy/moderate in sections, and all trails provided some excellent driving in a beautiful setting. I highly recommend them all!
After driving around in the Jeep, we filled up our packs and backpacked the South Rim of the park which is a 13 mile hike. We actually camped in a primitive site about halfway around the loop (right along the South Rim) and the views at sunrise were absolutely breathtaking! From there, we completed the loop and then headed back to San Antonio and Houston as we had to be back at the office on Monday.
Overall, the trip was awesome and the park has so much to offer. I will be doing a full write-up of the trip as we have several gear reviews including: Adventure Trailers can holders, Garvin EXT series bumper/rack system, Mountain Hardwear Meridian 2 tent, Thermarest Luxury series self-inflating mattress, and Thermarest Lounger in the next issue of JPFreek (due out on December 4).
One quick thing about the Garvin system: it is a must have for anyone who owns a TJ and plans to do an extended trip. I can't say enough about how well built the system is, from the welding on down to the entire setup. There were a few things I would have changed as far as the design is concerned but all of that will be included in my review.
Lastly, the following links are a few 'teaser' photos from our trip. More to come in issue #5 of JPFreek! Thanks, and happy Jeepin'.
