I Have Lost 5th Gear, Can You Help?

I Have An Opportunity To Buy A 1995 Wrangler With A Four Banger And 5 Speed. Jeep Is Very Clean And Priced Well.

However, The 5th Gear Does Not Engage. Seller Tells Me This Is Common And A Circlip Or Springclip Has Broken Inside The Tranny And Can Be Replaced To Restore 5th Gear. Seller Says Tranny Must Be Pulled To Do This, Cost About $500.oo

Anyone Had This Problem? Does This Make This Jeep A Bad Risk To Buy?

Please Help!

Another AZ Boy huh? Welcome to the crew!

AS for your issue, I wouldn't have a clue, never messed with the manuals in Jeeps. I know there are a couple of guys on here that can give ya a few words of wisdom though. 1BLKJP(jack) is a local as well and should be able to help ya more than me.

I'm not too sure if he's a tranny expert, but he's on here offen and should post in here. If not, you can try Joe @ Absolute Offroad PHX (a forum vender & Jeep mechanic).

If you can pull the tranny yourself, you'll save $$$. The biggest problem is getting it out. If the problem is the clip, it is simple to fix. I had the same problem, but eventually lost reverse also before I pulled the trans and found the misplaced clip. Reinstalled the clip and had 5th and reverse again. But like I said, getting the tranny out is not fun. Most of the cost is extracting and replacing(labor).

Welcome to WF
i say it all depneds on the price he wants, i would look around and see what similar jeps are getting in your area, and then subtract $800 from that just to be safe and offer him that

Lightbulb RE:5th gear

I got a 90 YJ I had bought it with the same lame excuse but before we pulled tranny we droped the oil to look at the colour in my case there was chunks of metal and the oil was mud brown cost me a a rebuild tranny instead of a $20.00 circlip best thing to do in my eyes would be to ask if your mechanic can look it over and pay for the fluid exchange because that is the best way to know for sure also have the rears checked also for metal if he disagrees than it's not worth the tires it's sitting on good luck and also don't trust freinds they will screw you harder than a stranger..........
