I've been lurking in Wrangler Forum off and on for a few months. I bought a '98 TJ a few days ago...
Really looking forward to tossing some pay at it. At the moment, I'm just looking to make sure it'll make it through the winter and be safe and comfortable for my wife to drive. It'll be my primary DD for the foreseeable future.
1998 2.5L/5-speed, pretty much stock stuff. I haven't come across anything
It seems to have spent a moment or two stuck in a pond or creek or something, though the frame is fairly solid for a Northeastern Jeep. The previous owner had the 2.5's top end rebuilt, the brake wheel cylinders replaced, new alternator, and a laundry list of other things that back up my suspicions. I still need to get the thing inspected, and plan to have the garage thoroughly inspect everything and change all the fluids. After that, pretty much all the work on it will be done by me and friends. Well, I might have a local Jeep shop install a lift at the end of this winter, but beyond that, this is going to be my learning experience.
I'm pretty familiar with the weaknesses of the 2.5L, AX-5, and Dana 35. In the future, those will go. For now, they stay and they will be fine for the way I'll be using them until the mods begin. This TJ is a blank canvas.
I pulled the soft top completely off and spent most of Saturday cleaning the interior up so that I could go on a drive, today. Everything seems pretty good.
I'm looking forward to modding this thing, sharing my experiences, and soaking up the wealth of knowledge in Wrangler Forums.
