Jeep rollovers?

Hey everyone, I'm looking into buying the new 4 door wrangler but my husband is completely against it because he says that wranglers have a high rollover rate and they are top heavy and all that. He says the wheel base is not safe at all. I have been looking around to find information on this, but can't find anything.

I wouldn't be surprised if this used to be an issue with earlier models of wranglers, but is this still an issue with the new ones that are coming out? Any information would help, thanks!

Drive like a normal person and don't take sharp turns going 60 and you'll be fine.

Jeeps are very safe stock, iv been hearing the new JK's are even more safe then the TJ's are.

It's an issue with people who dont know how to drive and think the jeep is a race car.

yeah that's what i figured, i owned a RAV4 for a while so you pretty much know what your limits are once you drive something for a while...i'm just going to have to try to convince him somehow. any more info would be appreciated!

3/5 though...for an "off-road" vehicle i would think that it would be a little better than that. I would assume that a lift and bigger tires would make that rating even lower?

yeah i understand..i really want one so i don't think this has really deterred me from looking into getting one. i just want to make sure that it will be worth the buy. i want to be able to have a nice looking car, something i can have fun with and take wherever, but also be safe for the kiddies.

There are many parents on this board who can give you their opinions on how they feel about having their kids in their jeep.

Check the rollover ratings for other SUV's

3-4/5 is about normal. You can get aftermarket bolt in cages that are stronger for most jeeps if you are really worried about it. Im not sure about JK's but for sure TJ's and older.

What does your hubby drive?

Your husband is basing his opinion off of old information. He is just part of the public that thinks Jeeps roll if you breathe on them hard, that the heaters don't work, they ride too rough and that the soft top is too loud.

My suggestion would be to go and at LEAST drive one first. The new wrangler four door has a longer wheelbase for added stability AND has traction control with roll mitigation. So if it feels any of the outside wheels lifting, it will lock the inside wheels to allow them to slip and the vehicle will settle itself again. As long as you aren't trying to drive it like a sports car you'll be fine.

Also, tell him that I heard the EVO's come with a nice compartment for your makeup case and curling iron.

lol pretty much...he's all into it and i cant get him away. he thinks the only cool cars in the world are ones that are turbo'd and have 400hp. evo's, s2000's, all that junk..i think trucks and jeep are way better. id rather drive off a curb than drive off my driveway all sideways cause i only have 2 inches of clearance

oh i just remember what he said when i brought up getting this jeep! He said that if I get a jeep then he will get a bike cause that is just as dangerous. ha. I always told him if he got a bike i would divorce him. Well, looks like I will just have to get a divorce and live happily ever after with my jeep!

Don't forget that the new JK Wranglers have stability control and a bunch of other safety features. And the 4-Door is a much better choice because of the longer wheel base.

had my wrangler hit and totaled by a semi.. I walked away with no issues, If I had been in say a Mitsu evo... I would have been dead.

I hit a geo(4 door version like a sidekick) in mine that pulled out in front of me, took out the KC lights and a dented fender on mine, the woman in the GEO, was lucky to walk away


Of course dhe was drunk with no insurance or valid license, but thats another story

I got rear-ended by a Miata once at a stoplight. I'm pretty sure you can imagine how that worked out. Have no fear though, the green paint came right off of my tow hook.

I have to say I had all the same questions before getting my first wrangler...So drove very carefully until I got use to it and I must say they are alot more stabil than you think. I commute in mine everday to work about 32 miles one way. Also, in my first 95 Jeep I was clipped by a little car going pretty fast and it spun me completely around, it tore the whole side of her car off and it just barely dinted my bumper and my fender. After this incident I was so suprised on how tuff and well built these wranglers really are. Her car was 2007 model...POS. As far as the roll over rate...I use to own a 2004 Ford Expedition and I think its roll over rate was alot worse.

a new jeep wrangler has the same tendency to rollover as a ford ranger, adn the same roll over rating for when it does happen, now go ask your husband for a ford ranger, i be he wont think that they are unsafe because of roll overs!

well jeeps are wider then most vehicles.. PUT ON SOME SPACERS.. PUT ON SOME WIDE TIRES.. PUT ON THE CORRECT WHEELS.. NOT FLASHY WHEELS THAT CONNECT ON THE FACE.. YOU NEED MORE TOWARDS THE INSIDE.. I see a lot of silly stuff here.. yes the roll cage is very weak and is design light weight. The jeep is designed light weight.. so why are you putting so much junk on it.. put some big tires on them to save gas.. its low geared for a reason.. the front grill is the major issue. all sorts of twigs and things can get into the cooling system.. No A-arm protection for liquid systems in the wheels.. No protection for block heaters or transmission heaters.. ... the list goes on.. The jeep is not ready to go offroad-ing from the start.. if you want a ready to go off-road rig then spend 50+k on one prebuilt.. I would never buy a rubicon.. it for flashy idiots.. the sport is the best. you decided your style and your safety features for 23,000.. The 30,000 is over priced..
