Up until 1986 the civilian Jeeps were given the CJ designation. From 1987 until now, the model designation has changed roughly every 10 years. The model's identifying letters don't really mean anything to anyone other than the manufacturer, but that hasn't stopped people putting words to the initials. There are many special editions of each model, but here are the basics.

Wrangler YJ = 1987–1995 (some people refer to it as the "Wide Jeep" because it is larger than all of the CJ models). They can be easily identified from the front by their square head lights.

Wrangler TJ = 1997–2006 (Some people call them the "Tough Jeep"). Additionally, from 2004-2006 they also made the Wrangler Unlimited (Also known as an LJ or "Long Jeep" because it is longer than standard TJ's much like a CJ-7 vs a CJ-5) They are easily identified from the front as they have round head lights their turn signals are square and are on the fenders.

Wrangler JK = 2007–Present. (Some "haters" say Jeep was "Just Kidding" when they made this model, but I prefer to call them the "Jeep King" ) From the start they made the Wrangler JK (2-door) and Wrangler Unlimited (4-door). Sometimes people refer to the 4-door JK as a JKU (JK Unlimited). They are easly identified from the front because they look similar to the olds Jeep CJ's in that the have round headlights with round turn signals under the headlights.
