We have three Jeeps in our family
My wife drives a TJ
I Drive a YJ
And as a work truck I keep a 1986 MJ Comanche
It is funny, I just got the YJ back again. Our first Jeep was the YJ, it was mostly my wife's driver, My 16 Year old step daughter wanted a vehicle, We restored a 67 Mustang for her, gave it to her and told her it would still have some teething problems/it was old and would have some kinks to work out, Just talk to me about it all and we will fix it as it happens.........Sure enough the brake system failed (Ended up being brand new power brake booster went bad, but that is besides the point)
I had her give me her Mustang, we gave her the YJ to drive while I looked at seeing what was wrong with her car (I had to drive her mom to and from work while this went on cause I gave her Jeep away!)
I fixed the car and went to give it back, the step daughter, said Mom, Tim, I really Really like having this Jeep, could I keep it and have it be my car?
Ok we were torn, Just spent aboat load of time and money redoing this Mustang which she said she had wanted, But then seeing her like the Jeep so, we could also understand......We offered to take her out and find her a Jeep she liked, but she wanted this one, So We gave it to her.
Now problem was my wife DID NOT want a Mustang, She wanted another Jeep So the Mustang was put for sale, and we were out Jeep Shopping
We found her a TJ she liked, less miles and she picked up Ac in the process (She still favors top down as her Ac of Choice) This one had both hard and soft tops, so she was happy, and Step Daughter was happy.....I never shared it but was always in part disappointed not having the YJ, it was rougher, more truck like, in my mind perhaps more masculine than the newer Jeep, But it was still a Jeep and I enjoy when I am in it.
Fast forward to now
Step Daughter is just finished her Junior year of College (time passes quickly)
Her Cat Converter, rusted out and blew apart......She was going to her dads and asked him about it.
The man took it to his cousins garage and he was putting a new converter on, he got under the Jeep and said No, this is trash it is rusted out and unsafe, they called me wanting to know if they should call a junk yard to come and get the old Jeep...He went out and bought his daughter a used Escort (good Bye Jeep) He said he wanted her to get through the rest of school with that...Now I was under this car two years ago, Yes a little body rust here and there underneath was pretty decent, In my mind I am thinking what is going on , so I got the Jeep towed to me
Got under the Jeep, found one spot Passenger rear floor you could almost put a pencil through if you worked at it, and one edge of a shackle had surface rust and pits, other wise it was solid, ugly but solid, peeling chipped paint and undercoat all under the Jeep, I was expecting bad . This Jeep had nothing real wrong, it was actually in decent shape and certainly did not deserve to be scrapped! While I was under I cleaned it up a bit, repaired the spot in the floor (I still have to paint it proper) Went out and got it Pa state inspected with a clean bill of health and Now I have the YJ back for myself!
I will not say much about my stepdaughter's father, but I can say, I have not been impressed with his cousins mechanical abilities and judgment! But the way it worked I got my own Jeep out of the deal so I should be happy!
Many little things in process, getting a Sahara top and going to do the tub with bedliner. It all ready has 3 inches lift shackles/body mounts Running 31's. Going to fix up the body rust and paint it this next year and not sure what all else will be in the future for it. But I am a happy person, Oh my step daughter saw I had it on the road, she is sorry she listened to her dad instead of us, but she will deal with it! (She misses the Jeep but likes the better fuel economy with the Escort and todays gas prices)
Oh and the Comanche is off the road getting a new engine as the original died, but it is a work truck my dad and I share to haul brush etc......If it seems decent after getting the engine all straightened out, I am going to fix it up a bit as well!
Quick side not about my wife and her TJ, just to show how she is into it all! This past year I got ready to put her hardtop on for winter, she got all pout y and sad, she did not want it on, she likes her soft top.....what you do not know is she has no windows for her soft top, full steel doors, beyond that the soft top had all the windows missing, every time I offered to get her some she says no, she does not need or want them, so she goes through, rain and snow and all of it, with the top up but windowless, and the thing is She loves it and could not be happier!
I sometimes frequent one of the other Jeep forums, just found this place and it seems like a nice spot!
