My wife was giving me a hassle about buying a Jeep,

until I took her for a test drive in a 2007 unlimited. I wasn't really considering a 4 door but it's a small compromise to make to get the wife on board.

Hello, my name is Mike, I live in south Florida. I've had this cool Jeep for about 3 weeks now and I'm confused "o) There is way too much after market stuff available for this vehicle and I don't have the knowledge or inclination to start dropping bucks on it just to find out later that I might have made a better choice.

I've been looking at these for about 2 years now, apparently not learning as much as I thought I did. Fundamentally I made a decent choice in this low mileage '07, I got what I wouldn't compromise on and the major compromise the two extra doors, which I can live with, particularly the higher tow rating.

Well moderated forums, I find, are the best source of information. So I would like to thank you guys for setting this forum up and maintaining it's civility, I know how tough it must be to keep them on an even keel.

I'm off to learn JEEP stuff.

Welcome, My wife was about as upset when we sold our 97 as I was, so I knew she would be on board with the 07 we bought. She just wanted to make sure there were safety enhancements over the TJ. I agree, there are A LOT of options on EVERYTHING and it is a bit overwhelming. Just glad to know we can come here and get honest opinions from the folks here!! Keep on Jeepin!

Thanks all. The picture above may be one of the few times that top will come down. Thank God the neighbor across the street is a JEEP salesman and owner or I would have never gotten it back up. He found that the web strap that connects the middle brace bar to the back had gotten twisted around the bar and just would not latch up. He told me it looked like the top had rarely been put down. Anyhow that was three weeks ago and my trigger finger is still shot, bad news for a musician. That pulling out and re setting the seal just front of the rear windows is tough. I've got to figure out a way to do that or make a tool to keep my trigger finger from blowing out.

I'm sorry I'm not up on the jeep lingo yet, it'll take me a bit to get all the language down so I'm probably not being very clear in my descriptions.

Talking I dumped my '07

Hi Mike, I kept my 2000 TJ and dumped my 2007 4door JK. Don't get me wrong I LOVE MY JEEPS. Had WJs, CJs, YJs, JKs, & TJs. They are talking about making that JK platform the new Jeep Truck. Then I'll have one of those. As for add-ons, start small and work your way up. Join a Jeep club and see what other Jeepers are doing to theres. Then make it yours. Your Jeep is about what you like. Some like stage 0 (the way it came). Some like stage 4 (most extreme). Just make it yours. And remember wives come and go but Jeeps are forever. OlllllllO

At this point I'm really only considering two upgrades, I need roof racks for the canoes and kayaks and I can easily see that a winch could be real handy when you find yourself needing one. As for the 4 door the 3,500lbs tow rating will come in real handy, none of my stuff is over about 2,400lbs so it gives me a little room to spare, if I recall correctly the 2 door is rated at 2,000lbs max. Launching the 19' West Wight Potter from unmaintained ramps and beaches will be a breeze with this JEEP. Besides, if a good deal comes along on a 2 door, I can always snatch it up. I'm eyeing my brother's '47 Willys, but I'm not sure I could give him the old '84 Harley for it.

How many women would spend three days camping out of a canoe on the banks a the Oklawaha River "o)

I'm already learning, I think it would be a safe assumption that jeeps are used by many to get self and gear into the wilds, I see so many pristine 4 X 4s and H2s around these parts that I may, in error, assumed something along the opposite lines, now I would never criticise anyone for driving what ever they want but what may be a false assumption on my part was thinking these beefy 4 X 4s maybe a little overkill for Walmart shoppers "o)

Thanks, I haven't been adding much to the forum but I sure have been reading quite a bit. Starting to figure some stuff out. Still haven't discovered a better way to take the top down. Heck even removing the back window and replacing it takes a good bit of strength, a little beeswax helps, getting old sucks "o)

Try looking on youtube for some vids about taking your top down/up. Thats how i got some tips with mine.

Welcome to the forum.
I personally have only had a YJ and now a TJ, but have several buddies that have JK's (2 and 4 door varieties) so I can honestly say that the top part gets a lot easier after doing it a few times and in the sun/heat it is much easier.
My first time doing a top was on my YJ in the winter and it took about an hour and a lot of bad words, after a few trial and errors along the way I found short cuts, I can now take down or put up my soft top in less than 10 minutes with everything off.

So you are asking for mod opinions ehh? I would suggest getting 31's 10.50 wide, and pick the rims and tread of your choice. That is the best "toughen up" mod you can look for if you don't plan on lifting it. Next I see you are thinking about a winch, well they get expensive I am not sure of your budget but winch & front and rear bumpers are sure a good upgrade. Roof Racks are Awesome I am debating on putting one on mine, but they are very spendy as well.

I understand you are new to jeeps, but the only person that truly knows what you want is yourself. Are you a chrome rim guy or black rims? Are you a mud terrain tread guy or all terrain tread? Stock lift or lift kit? Give us a few examples of what you like and I am sure some of us will put you in the right direction with quality brands that will last you a long time.

There are certainly things I want to do to this JEEP. My first "must have" is the roof rack, then the winch along with bumpers, if needed, though I can get by with a come along for the time being, it's more of a security thing. As I decide what I need to do to this JEEP I'll need opinions on what works and what's junk, taking into consideration the point of diminishing returns.

I will eventually/maybe upgrade the tires and wheels but my tires seem general purpose, which is good for now. I'll not be changing these until thread wear demands it.

I'm not into mudding, don't get me wrong I can sit in my lawn chair and watch guys and gals do it all day long but it's not my cup of tea. However on the roads and trails this JEEP will be seeing I'll not be able to avoid mud, mostly I'll be dealing with wash outs, trails little better than wide paths and deep sugar sand. I love canoeing, sailing, hunting and camping and this is what I bought this JEEP for. I don't need chrome to do any of that, basically I just want this vehicle to handle the local terrain. I'll not be crawling over rocks, though I may need to deal with chunks of coral and limestone from time to time. When I move out of south Florida to north Florida or maybe Georgia I may have to reconsider how this JEEP is set up.

I have a lead on a couple of highly respected fabricators near me and I'll try to meet up with them. Then I can better understand what is needed and not needed for the area I live in. I certainly don't want to over specialize the vehicle at this point my thinking is put on it what I need and keep it as general purpose as possible until I find the need to tweak specific upgrades.

I wouldn't think you'd need a fabricator for anything with the amount of aftermarket parts for jeeps out there... quadratec.com 4x4trailgear.com jcwhitney.com just to name a few have pretty much everything imaginable for jeeps! I'd start looking through those sites and maybe even call and request a print catalog which is a little better if you don't know what you're looking for you can just flip pages and find tons of ideas!!! We can help you make quality decisions with brands and experiences with certain equipment as you go! Good luck. I can't wait to get a 4dr!

I would recommend a fabricator that is good and isn't trying to get rich. I fab up a bunch of my own stuff and you can do it yourself for about 1/3 the cost of new..so if you paid a fabricator I'd say you could get a quality product for 3/4 the price online. You don't have to worry yourself with reading a bunch of reviews online and what not..you know exactly what you're getting.

My husband and I both have jeeps, '97 TJ and an '07 JK. Love them both! We wheel them every other weekend and have a blast together! We've done a lot of upgrades to both jeeps. Welcome to the site. You'll find it helpful.

I'm a fair hand when it comes to leather and wood, the only thing I do with metal is make knives, I'm not a welder. I have been involved with 6 or 7 motorcycle shops that did quite a bit of fabricating. I haven't seen any need to have any upgrades done to my bikes but then I'm not into the whole chopper scene, as far as riding them goes, I've done my share of custom leather work for high end customs.

Knowing these guys, chopper shops, as I do, I'm kind of assuming that actual honest working fabricators specializing in 4-wheelers are going to be familiar with aftermarket products and can steer me towards or away from them. A lot of what these guys do is fitting the aftermarket products to the machine.

Basically I believe you can't go wrong with skilled and honest craftsman, it won't take me long to size these guys up. I still have to meet them. Again, my experience tells me to look at his craft, skill and humility, these three things have to be in balance or I will keep looking.

If I ordered, say a rack to install myself, if it says it can be done in 4 hours it would take me 6 and I would need a buddy to help. I know I can do a good job of it, but my time would be better spend doing what I'm skilled at and let the pro do the job for me.

I did install the trailer hitch on my last pickup. I'd of gladly paid someone to do it for me while I set up a couple of guitars or built a new tool bag "o)

From what I've seen of available roof rack systems and what I've been told by Frank of Florida Bay Outfitters, custom made systems are very good.

I find the idea that honest 4 by 4 shops are rare, disturbing, it seems hardly likely that such differences occur simply because of the machine, though I suppose it could be so. At any rate I appreciate the heads up, I have been fore warned.

I have buddies that are machinist, building drag cars and drag bikes, they fabricate quite a few parts, one guy builds experimental aircraft a skilled wielder with Nuclear Power Plant Rating, he's built some sick stuff for his quad. If I find the 4 by 4 guys to be a bunch of rip offs I will have to design my own systems and have my buddies build them. Bumpers and winches and much of the other stuff does seem to be simply bolt on stuff, if the fabricator thing doesn't pan out I can find seriously talented wrenches among my friends, but I loose the knowledge of JEEP information and aftermarket recommendations.

As mentioned earlier in this thread, I can find a local club and get the low down on the available shops and fabricators in my area, that along with the knowledge base of this forum should do me well.

I've had tons of luck getting help from other forum jeepers and a case of beer is usually cheaper then a 4x4 shop!!!
