New and frustrated

Hello, im new to this forum. I bought a green 98 Jeep Sahara about 2 months ago. In the hopes of going Jeepin with my 21 year old son. Well my son just joined the Navy. Now im just a lonely Jeep owner, with no mechanic. I love my new Jeep a great deal. But I fear what people are telling me and claiming they can fix, will haunt me forever. Can someone please help me.
Here is my issue; { Most of the time} when Im at a stop and I try to shift into 1st. gear, its hard. And reverse it grinds real hard. All other gears are fine and it doesnt do it all the time. Ive been told alot of different things. Any ideas ~Please help-go green

Welcome bud.

As for your tranny issue....Your 98 Sahara comes standard with the 4.0 and you state it is a manual..so your transmission is an AX-15.

The AX-15 is like an old truck trans, it will make some noise. Also the sencros in the transmission are picky about the fluid you use as they are almost a paper like compound.

Your first step is to change out the fluid (or check it if you have not yet) with fresh fluid. Here is a link with a good write up for doing so...it is very simple job.... AX-15 Manual Transmission Service

That is your first step especially if you have never changed the fluid ...you don't know when if was changed last if ever.

If your trans is still giving you issues after let us know.

Go with the Redline MT 90, best thing I ever did for my AX-15.

Welcome Go Green! I just changed my trans fulid this weekend. It's an easy job and made a noticeable difference for me. BTW make sure you have a fluid transfer pump - you can get one for about $5.

Tried the MT-90

Well, I replaced my Tranny fluid with Redline MT-90. It did not help with the hard shifting. Any other suggestion?

Welcome to the forum, and congrats on your new ride! I am no expert on Jeep transmissions nor the clutch. What I can bring to the table is experience with shift issues.

First, you already accomplished. A fluid drain and fill. When you did this, did you use a magnet to see if it picks up any metallic shards in the old fluid?

Next, depending on the tranny, I know using certain fluids can actually ruin the blockers, especially if using the wrong fluid with paper blockers. There is no way of knowing what fluid was used prior unless you have all service records.

Next, is it possible you have clutch bleed off? There is a solid way to tell for certain, and I had shift issues in my Vette. Installed an adjustable clutch master cylinder and shift issues went away. If interested, I will explain the 1 minute test.
