new girl with a few questions

I'm thinking hard about getting this Wrangler. I'm picking it up today for a test drive. It has a lift kit on it, and I've read a little about the DW thing. What all should I look for as far as problems go when I'm testing it?
Its a 2000 Sport with the 4.0, manual, soft top, lift kit with I think 33" tires, American Racing rims. It has 120k miles on it. He said he will take $7900.

Is that pretty high mileage for these? I need something reliable, as well as something fun.

Thanks! I'll take a picture while I have it and post it on here.

Welcome to the Forum. The price doesn't sound bad if the jeep is in good condition, no rust or other majors. For the test drive, take it out on the highway and get it between 50 and 60 this is usually where the DW kicks in if you go over any unsmooth pavement. a small bump in the road will set it off it exists. You also want to get a chance to put it into 4 wheel off pavement and test that out as well. Check for leaks or drips, transfer case, axles, or anywhere under the hood. If you can, take it to a mechanic to look it over for you. That's about it for me but I am sure that some of these other guys can give you additional advice.

First off Welcome!
Many Jeep's on here have a lot more mileage than that, be sure to check the basics like rust, leaks, things like that.
As for the DW (having experienced it), drive it over bumps and such between 40-60 mph. If it has the DW, you WILL know it.
As for needing something fun, you picked the perfect vehicle

*Edit: Damn JD beat me to it! ha

Ok, so basically the biggest problem I have to worry about is the death wobble issue, got it... any problems with the tranny's? I'm sure they see tons of abuse.

I'm no stranger to engine swaps and rebuilds, so I think I can tackle just about any problem that may arise, so the mileage really doesn't scare me. What does is availability of parts. There are NONE of these in junkyards anywhere

I'm getting rid of my 07 supercharged Cobalt for this.. it just doesn't suit me any more. I'm too much of an adventurer and it hinders my ability to adventure I also am a bit of a careless driver (accidentally running over parking curbs, hitting potholes and whatnot) the Cobalt needs someone who will be a little nicer to it.

Where do you live?
Perhaps somebody from this forum can take a look at the Jeep you want.

I'm on my test drive now...

so far heres what I have found:

Huge dent on hood. No rust anywhere.
Speedo doesn't work.
Ignition is broken.
CEL and airbag lights on.
shift knob and trim piece missing.
ds exterior door handle doesnt work
parking brake doesn't work
no lock in glove box, center console lid broken.
drives straight but shakes, needs alignment/balance
when i push in the clutch the tranny shift out kinda hard.. is that normal?

tell me what you all think a fair price is before I make an offer.

New to wranglers, but you said this guy wants $7900 for a '00 and it has that much wrong? I'd offer him with what you listed wrong, $5500. Check out the listing prices they have on Kelly Blue Book (New Cars, Used Cars, Blue Book Values & Car Prices - Kelley Blue Book). They may help when making offers for auto's.

did you check the underside of the floor panels/ or under the carpet to check for rust?

check the motor for any noticeable leaks?

Hope I kinda helped

That doesn´t sound good. I wouldn´t buy this Jeep. And it´s way too expensive.

Well, he has a 99 with 70k miles and I drove that one too.. that one made this one look and feel brand new.

Sucks cause I really like it... all the little things I can fix, no big deal. He is fixing the ignition and the door handle.

I checked around for leaks, the only one I could find was an exhaust leak which again, is no big deal. I like tinkering with stuff.

I didn't look under the floor pieces, I can do that on Monday when I go back.

You guys really think only $5500? I doubt he will take that...

How is the tread on the tires and are the rims steel or alloy? Are the tires all terrain or an aggressive tread? I think the asking price is a little high also.

The tires are basically brand new, I am not sure about the rims but it does have a matching rim/new tire for a spare. The tires are a somewhat aggressive rough terrain style.

The rims might be, these ones:

Here is a picture, I forgot to take one while I was driving it, so here it is after they pulled into the shop.

See if they can get the shake adjusted out of it. The one you have pictured in the link is a black alloy rim (good). If it is a black steel rim it could have a bent rim from being wheeled. The tires look like they could be all terrains from your pic. First mod. would be to get a more aggressive tread for wheeling --approx. $800 for a set of 4. The jeep also has the black plates around the corners of the tub and along the area under the doors. Can be hiding rust and considering the vehicle has a lift and other issues stated in your earlier post sounds like it has been used offroad. Go after a lower price or keep looking.

Welcome to the forum. I would not go any higher than about $6200 for that in its current condition. Take your time. It took me 2 months to find my baby.

Thanks guys. Its hard for me to try and pass this up though. There's something about it that is just reeling me in. There may be ones out there in better shape, less miles or whatever, but this one is just screaming my name!!!
For this area, it seems this is a fair price. I've been all over craigslist and ebay, they are all pretty expensive here.
Here is a better picture of it:

Sounds like you were pretty set on picking this up. Did you get it, what did you pay?

The electronic issues are somewhat worrysome. The CEL light can easily be read and diagnosed what problems exist. The airbag light however, possibly more trouble. Some of the things you list are somewhat cosmetic, but from the sounds of it, I'd think it was stolen and recovered. And I've heard some horror stories of how badly stolen Jeeps are abused.

Door handle doesnt work, the two possibly locking interior compartments broken, ignition broken. If the speedometer is broken then there's no way of knowing exactly how many miles are on it.

I bought my 99 with 80k miles and absolutely no problems for $7,000. Its not lifted and it has the factory wheels and tires, but everything is in good (really good) shape. I think you could get a better deal...

I bought my 99 with 92k, not a leak to be found, like new and all stock for 9k. But I'm in Colorado so they are a bit more here. I'm with the other posters, slow down and shop some more, look in Colorado too. However if your mind is set...
