New-How are the Transmissions on these things??!

91 Jeep Wrangler YJ 4.0 Six Cylinder 5 speed.

Got 149,000. First started clickity clacking and grinding in 3rd (possible blown synchros) and now it's doing it in 1st and 2nd. Just wondering if this is unusual (might not be considering the mileage) or if these Jeeps have a bulletproof transmission or they're the first to go.

Thanks!
MANGO

91 should have the ax-15... 150k is not bad for one, depends what kind of life it had, how well it was taken care of and if it was built on a friday or a wednesday......you can replace it with the same or upgrade to a nv3550.

Have you looked at the U joints? I just replaced mine in the rear drive shaft today. Vibe started in third and fourth gears and was getting worse. found a bad joint ( HA HA HA ) replaced them both and now it's smooth as silk.

Synchros have been an issue with 3rd gear in the 92 I had and the 93 I have now. 92 had a hard life before I got it and my 93 has had years of mud and water abuse. Upgrading instead of just rebuilding this time with the addition of a vent system to help keep water out.

Not a highly unusual problem

Yep, replaced the U-joints. Them suckers were bad!!! New clutch and all the other things that could be replaced while the tranny was out were replaced.

Welcome to WF!

the drivetrain of a jeep is usually pretty good, but all cars get problmes when they're that old, and jeeps get beat up usually so it s not suprising

Cha....Just replaced mine 93' YJ 2.5L with an ax/5, 3rd gear sincro was the first to go and then it got harder and harder to get'er into gear. I found that the main bearing was toast when I went to replace the clutch so, I got a rebuilt ax5 from Scotty's 4x4 in Fontana Ca. About $800 w/6 mo warranty. Also replaced the master clutch cylinder while I was at it! It runs better than ever now! BTW, If you have the 4.0L then you have the ax15 tranny, (Just so you know!)
