New in south east PA

Hello all!

I currently drive an 89 Cherokee that is soon to be replaced with a Wrangler. In the past I have had an 81 Cherokee and a 49 Willys CJ2a. These were mixed in with an assortment of 2 and 4 wheel drive trucks over the years.
I have been sorting through the classifieds while waiting for funding to be processed. I have determined that I am in the 10 - 12k price range. My options are to go with an older vehicle and use the extra funds to make it right or hope to find something newer and ready to go. I will honestly spend most of my time on pavement but When I can I will be off road. I tend to prefer mud having grown up in Florida swamps and avoid rock crawling due to a fear of heights.
I hope to find some good info particularly on what to look for to avoid getting more headaches than need.
All suggestions are welcome.
