Smile New Jeeper wants upgraded rims/tires

I am a jeeper of only 9 months, but love my 2002 Black Jeep Wrangler Sport. Hope to use the forum for info as I am driving a stock jeep and would like some upgrades. First I'd like to get new rims/tires, 31", so any advice would be appreciated!

Welcome. What do you want your tires to do? you want black steelies or DC-1's?

I have no idea what steelies or DC-1's are so you could definitely educate me. I know that I want to get out of the stock passenger tires but don't want a huge super swamper either so... something in-between.

you should be able to fit the 31's without a lift. Or you could throw in a "budget boost for pretty cheap just to be safe. Rubicons come with 31's and no lift, so you could do it.

Rims are gonna be personal preferance...do you want chrome, polished aluminum, black steal? And your budget will also play a large part in the brand and style of rims/tires.

If you want a nice setup i'd go with a set of 31" BFG allterrains, and some soft 8 black rims. They rims are cheap..$40 a rim.

okay, so I get the steelies... I think I'd like to go chrome on the rims and I was thinking that 31"s were going to be the choice w/o having to do a lift... so thanks for the links and confirmation on that.

One more thing....when you get the rims you should look at getting 3.50in" or more backspacing on the rims. This will make the tires stick out a little further, making any rubbing issues less possible.

I have 32's with no lift and I rubbed when the steering wheel was turned all the way. Once i put the new rims on with 4" backspacing, now it doesn't rub anymore. I need a lift still cause it rubs the fenders when I go anything offroad.

Okay, I hadn't thought about the rubbing issue. I have a small budget that is why I am thinking about chrome. Also, I am not really a fan of black rims. what are your thoughts?

update

I decided to stay with the stock rims for now and just get new tires. I narrowed in on the BFG AT/KO's and then found out that they were $152ea at Costco, so... new tires and I am very happy! Side note, I also took off the front milkjugs so you can see the tread on the tires better. Not bad for a newb jeeper girl IMO. Click image for larger version

31's look great on a Jeep with no lift without a doubt. I snagged a set of Yokohama's A/T's from Odhinn and they are the best tires I have ever used. I was using Good Year Wranglers and they were prolly the worst tires I think anyone could ever stick on a Jeep.

Nice start! 31's definitely make a better look. If you decide on steelies down the road, check out JEGS or Summit Racing. Good prices at both and 10-12 dollar fee to ship. I got 5 from Jegs for $211 total.

JEGS does have some great deals. Jeep Essentials and JEGS are the two mags I get.
