I've been monitoring the forums for a bit of time now, but this is my first checkin as a Jeep owner. I purchased my first JKU last Friday. If all goes well and I have followed the instructions correctly...you'll see a picture below. It already doesn't look like this as i've removed some of the decaling.
While this is my first Jeep, my family had several jeeps while i was young. This includes a CJ-5 Golden Eagle and a Renegade. While researching Jeeps I ran across a few pics and it reminded me of the great times we had in the snow in those things. My dad used to plow car lots with a plow attached to them to make a few extra bucks.
I am pretty excited about this jeep and getting to "build it" with my kids. I'm a little bit of a vehicle junkie as i've had an S2000, a MB E500, a E55 AMG, a CLS 55 AMG, a BMW 645 convertible and a few others. Crazy enough, at a fraction of the price, I find myself more excited about this JKU sport than all the other vehicles. I am looking foward to the "projects".
It WILL NOT be a daily driver, so we might go a little overboard with it. It will replace the Yukon XL for hauling the fam around on summer weekends. On bad winter days, it will replace my other vehicle that puts 410HP to the 2 rear wheels - terrible in the snow.
This wouldn't be a proper checkin if i didn't thank all of you, incl. the moderators for building the content on this site. I was originally planning on buying a 10th anniversary rubi, but after all my research I decided to "build it" instead. Not that there is anything wrong with the 10th, it just wasn't for me. This probably saved me significant money (which i am already finding alternative ways to spend on aftermarket stuff). I am glad this forum convinced my that the right choice for us was:
Going with the JKU Sport with 24S - i have to have bluetooth. Surprisingly, the bluetooth integration is better than my MB.
No Leather - this saved my children's skin today. In my original plans, i thought i would upgrade here. After several days with the black cloth - i am so pleased I may never put aftermarket leather in. My wife even likes it and she hasn't had a car without leather in 15+ years.
Deciding to "build" - i am pretty exited to do some of the work with my son and teach him about turning a wrench. I have fond memories of working on motorcycles and go carts at an early age. Building it will allow me to share these memories with him.
Anyway - thats a little about me. i look forward to documenting as much as I can and giving back to the community. My current thoughts are to add:
18" Moto Metal 961's with Red Inserts (company colors are red/black)
35's or 37's
Rubicon Express 3.5 or....larger.
re-gearing to 4.XX or 5.XX
putting Smittybilt Rails, and XRC MOD front bumper
looking for suggestions on the rear bumper/tire bracket
having some fun with some decals/lettering
WildBoar T-tops before cold weather.
some lights (maybe the Rigid 50" or KC flamethrower)
i guess i can revisit this post in a year and see how much of the original vision was realized/not realized or changed from all the great things i learn here.
Thanks again for all your advice and help!
