I've owned a 55 CJ, a 90 YJ which I regret everyday selling and now I have a 02 TJ. I'm starting to think its a little to fancy for me and that I would rather have an older model. I miss my square headlights!

Also, I seem to be getting terrible gas mileage. It's a 6cyl automatic, 3" lift with 32" tires and a snorkel---are the tires the culprit?

You da man!!!

Welcome to the forum. You could always buy a new used yj grill and replace the tj grill.

How terrible is the mileage?

Welcome to the Forum!

Define "terrible gas mileage". None if them get GREAT mileage but my 92 4.0 gets between 16-19MPG with similar mods.

Are you driving in the mountains all the time? There is something wrong there if not. Check all the usual things that hurt mileage. Tune up, tire pressure, alignment, air filter, right foot pressure...ect. That is terrible mileage.

No. Just the highway and in town daily.

I have had everything checked--someone said it's the lift & the size of the tires hurting the mileage.

If you have a carb instead of fuel injection that could be your problem. The throttle shaft that goes through the carb body is steel and the carb is aluminium. It will wallow out in time causing a vacumn leak which makes the engine run rich. Gas milage suffers greatly. I have this problem and am getting about 8 MPG at highway speeds and about 12-13 mpg if I keep in down to around 50 mpg

Thanks for the info!
I also heard that maybe the Jeep gear ratio was not set correctly for the size of tires.
All I know is that with gas prices rising this is out of control. Does anyone know the correct gear ratio for 32" tires and a 3-4" lift?

I would guess 4:10 or 4:56. Check with your local 4X4 shop and see what they say. Where in Co. are you. I am near Ft. Collins. You can go with 3:73 or 3:55 and get a bit better gas milage but you will loose some grunt for 4 wheeling. Chances are with the milage you are getting you have something wrong in the fuel system. Look there first.

Smile New tires

I checked my Gears after checking with my local 4X4 shop. Mine are 3.73 and my tires were 32"---it was suggested that I go down to 31" and I have & it seems to help tremendously.

Also I am in Castle Rock.

thanks so much for all the advice!!!
