New member - just got '97 TJ 4.0 Sahara Auto in UK
I just bought a 1997 Wrangler TJ 4.0L Sahara automatic. She's black with a soft and hard top, and 83k miles on the clock.
Seems in really good condition, had a good look around before taking the plunge. I have previously viewed:
- a 2002 TJ 4.0 Manual with only 19k on the clock, but I didn't like the manual tranny, I am very tall and had nowhere to put my foot when not using the clutch.
- a 1988 YJ 4.2 auto, loved the old skool carburettor engine and the column shift, but it was a bit rough looking and the guy was asking way too much for it and wouldn't move on price.
Overall, I think I got the best of the three. Haven't driven it a great deal yet, but am loving the experience so far.
I am generally a big BMW head. My daily driver is a 1989 BMW 635 CSi Highline Motorsport Edition in Misano Red. It's a beautiful car, but I wanted something with a drop top and some load-lugging capability. The jeep fits the gap for things that I can't do with the bimmer. They are very different, but share the old-skool charm, smooth auto tranny experience and straight-6 engine config.
Have a few newbe questions that I hope you might be able to answer for me:
There seems to be a small oil leak on the top of the engine. There is usually a small pool of what looks like oil on the top of the exhaust manifold. There is a grubby trail across the top of the valve cover and around the throttle wheel - it looks like oil is leaking out from the plastic breather that is a few inches forward of the oil filler cap. Don't know if it's the connection into the valve cover or the connection to the (vacuum hose?).
I want to get remote central locking installed as having to manually lock and unlock each door and the tailgate is driving me nuts already. Is there a decent aftermarket kit to do this? I'm sure my friendly Jeep dealer could help if I pay enough, but I'd prefer to fit it myself.
Under heavy acceleration, when I'm almost at full throttle, there is a kind of ticking sound. I can't determine whether it is coming from the engine compartment or the exhaust, it's definitely from the middle of the vehicle. It doesn't seem to happen when I rev it in neutral, only while moving. I quite like the sound, it sounds a bit raw and meaty, but I don't know if it is supposed to make that sound. My friends 1970 v8 chevelle makes that kind of noise (with straight-out exhausts), and I love it, so I'm not complaining, but I just want to know if it is normal or not?
Final thing - the passenger mirror appears to be magnified, so I get a large magnified view of a small area through that side. The driver side mirror is more like I would expect, it has a proper wide view and has the standard US-style "Objects in the mirror are closer than they appear" warning on. Both mirrors are branded Jeep with the logo. I would like to get a mirror the same as the driver side on the passenger side. Can I just order the glass from the driver side and fit it on the other side? Is this the standard setup, I can hardly see anything out of the passenger side.
