New Member Needs Advice!

Hello all and thank you for creating such an awesome site. I've always been infatuated with the Wranglers and after a long Iraq deployment, my wife hooked me up. I have a '94 Wrangler, 4.0 I6 automatic and absolutely love it. I'm new to the Jeep lifestyle so please bear with me. I do have a concern though, my fuel mileage is literally sucking and bad! I believe the tank I have is either 22 or 25 gal (heavy duty) and I'm averaging about 240 miles per tank! Seems kind of rough to me, but I could be wrong. I replaced the air filter and gas cap (it was dry rotted bad) yesterday to see if that helps and I don't abuse it, yet; also all the fuel lines/hoses feel dry around the tank and there's no check engine light on. Any other advice?

Is there a lift on your jeep? What size tires? Jeeps aren't known for gas milage, the 4.0 is a thirsty mother! I average 12-14 can do better if I keep it below 70.

Thank you for the support Xgrunt. I love what I do so it's all good. My Wrangler has a 4 inch lift and I'm running 31x10.50R15LT size tires. What's troubling me as well is every once in a while I get the fuel fume smell. But only every once in a while. I just got under it and put my head as close to the tank as possible and got a very faint smell of fumes, but I assume that's normal ventilation? I'm thinking I might need to go get the fuel system looked at. The gentlemen that owned it before said he would get about 400 miles per tank. This is stumping me. I know they're not known for good gas mileage, but with the faint smell of fumes every once in a while, I'm a little concerned.

Welcome to the Forum and Thank You for your Service

The only way my jeep would get 400 from a tank would be on the back of a flatbed. I'm lucky to get 220 from 19 gallons.

Thanks guys. I'll say it's good 2 go with the mileage. Should I be worried about the smell of gas every once in a while or is this pretty normal too. And I mean it's every once in a while. Like once every 3 or 4 days. I honestly cannot find a leak anywhere.

Welcome home son. God bless you and the sacrifice you have made. Enjoy the jeep. Yes, milage does suck. When you get the gas smell doyou have the back window out or the top down? If so it could just be unburnt fuel in the exhaust. Old Jeep have a cat on it? That could be it too.

That was Purdy as hell right there!!!!

Uh.... dad... Uncle Jessie is crazy! Sooo cool though!
