New member with wiper switch problem.

Hi, I have a 90 Wrangler YJ (2-90 Chrysler of Canada) that a friend broke the turn signal arm. She did this out of frustration because the wipers came on at will on a sunny day. I purchased a new switch at the parts store and the arm assembly from the dealer. (Tilt wheel, intermittant wipers w/o cruise, manual) The parts new and old are identical. The problem arose with the dimmer switch rod and nylon spring retainer shown in various manuals. This has a rod that terminates short of the switch. The instruction reads " Make sure the switch rod is connected, then carefully position the housing on the column" Connected by what? I'll attach a picture of a plastic piece that I removed (Though not so diligantly or I'd remember how it fit) that somehow fits into the solution. (maybe) I showed the parts manager at the dealership and it wasn't anywhere on his parts diagram. The key cylinder by the way removes easily via a torx screw removal. When assembled with the turn signal assembly the wiper switch is still loose (attached via the removable pin) What did I miss? I can be stupid, but never afraid to ask.
