New to forums/my bday present

So for my 34th bday my wife has decided to let me finally break down and buy a jeep.As i have never owned 1 before, i have no clue what to look for. It's going to mainly be used for work(i live 6 miles away) and beach fun as we moved back to the Gulf Coast(P'cola).I have wanted a jeep for years and its finally time for me to get one.

My questions are:

1 whats a good mileage on a jeep to stay under on a used jeep.
2 what do i need to look for when buying as far as defects, common issues, etc.
3 i have looked at a few that do not have AC,but living in Florida i need AC.Is this something that can easily be added as all i have heard is that its real easy to pickup DIY maintenance on jeeps.

I'm sure i have more but these are what have stuckout in my mind.and i didnt wanna start throwing up links for craiglist.

thanks in advance!

I am pretty new to the Jeep world myself too but as for mileage, I have been getting around 17-18 combined on my '09 Rubicon.

Congrats on finally getting a Jeep. They are truly special and unique vehicles.

welcome to the forum & to jeeps.

1) what is your budget? jeeps last for a long time. i have a jeep w/ 209,000 mikes on it, it needs a new tranny but the engine is still strong.

2) look for rust on the frame around windshield frame ect. if you want to know if it has been used off road before: check the exhaust for burned on my, check the undercarriage for dents in the skid plates, also check above the skid plates for caked on mud that may be resting there. stay away from any thing with a 3" body lift.

3) if ac is important to you it will be easier and cheaper to get a jeep that has it already installed.

^I think he was referring to how many miles the vehicle has on it not the mpg.

It kind of depends on what model your going to get. What year of jeep are looking for and in what price range?

Guess i shoulda worded the question better.IE i found a 93 for $4500 and only has 121,000 miles on it.Didnt know whats considered a good mileage on a used jeep or whats considered "stay far away".I will post a few adds i have been looking @.

Mods please feel free to remove these if this is not allowed.

A YJ (1987-1995) is a good choice. This 93 seems a tad high in the price. What engine and tranny is in it? Look for rust under the carpet. Back where the seat belt retracters are. The back body mounts look for rust their and in the frame.

i would stay away from the 4 cylinder. it is under powered if you add bigger tires and a lift.

^Famous last words.

You'll be much happier with the 4.0L than the 2.5L regardless of what you do or don't do to your jeep.

Don't let AC be a deal breaker. You'll probably find that you can't air condition the jeep with the TOP OFF. If I lived in Florida, I'd never have a top on my jeep. Just carry a trail cover for those pop-up rain showers you all get down there.
