Newbie Checking In

Hi everyone! Finally got around to trying & buying a 89 Wrangler after 42+ years of driving and riding almost everything else with wheels (and lots of boats and ships, too).

I've been into enduro and more modern dual sport motorcycling off and on since the 1970s, so I know and appreciate off road stuff. Always wanted a Jeep though, and when the need arose to buy a second non-motorcycle vehicle for the household, I figured it was time to indulge myself and try out a Jeep.

Short version of the story - after shopping around, found a decent 89 YJ that appears to be well maintained with a few good optional bits and pieces. Currently halfway through some required exhaust work that was reflected in the sale price. No other big issues other than needing a new windshield frame sooner than later and then some fresh paint. Best part of the deal is that compared to most of what I looked at in the lower price point ranges, this one has almost no rust other than the windshiled frame. Worst part of the deal is that the exhaust was worse than expected. Manifolds will be coming off to inspect/replace the gasket as needed. Somebody shoot me now - heat indexes are off the scale this summer down here.

But it still looks like a fun project.

Welcome to the forum. I too have ridden bikes and still do since the late 60's. Have my KTM dual sport now. Like to ride when not in the Jeep.

Thanks for the welcomes everyone.

Yeah, I need to start shooting some pics before I start any real changes to document the project/progress. I'm up to my eyebrows trying to get one of two bikes running again, then I can turn my efforts towards the DIY exhaust work to prep the Jeep for my main exhaust guy to go in and do up the front half of the system (cat-back already done and made it quiet enough to find the splits in the Pulse Air tubes going to the cat, which ain't in that good a shape either). The tubes appear to be NLA, so the plan is to go with a new headpipe and cat that doesn't use air injection to stay clean and simplify life.

At the rate I move, I figure I should have some "beginning" pictures up within a few days. As things progress, pics will be uploaded into my SmugMug hosting account in a gallery just for the Jeep so folks can look in to see if there are any details I don't bother to post into threads here. Links will follow and probably go into my profile too for convenience.
Here is a link to some of what I've been up to before the Jeep: mark1305's Photos Some boring, some pretty cool stuff.

OK, Fooled around and got some pics to record how it is before any "improvements". Because some of it has been rebuilt, I've been going through it to verify major components. Still has the stock Dana 30HP up front; Dana 35 out back; AX15 transmission; 3" body lift and stock suspension on sagged stock springs. Rebuilt motor (258) installed a little while back (runs good and strong with no quirks). All mechanicals seem well maintained except for the exhaust which was a known issue and is halfway repaired at this point. Biggest body issue will be the windshield frame/glass at some point down the road. Has a good new bikini top with windjammer and a worn soft top with the upper convertible door windows.

But it runs good and drives good and has good tires, so it's a good starting point (just like all the motorcycles that have taken over my life).
