Newbie from NC

Hi everyone. First off what a great forum. I've only had my jeep a week and I am new to a lot of this and I have already learned so much from this site. I picked up a 94 YJ 4 cylinder 5 spd last week and I think I have the jeep bug. All of a sudden I want to jack it up, get mud tires, and spend all my money on it! I'm already thinking about new motor and suspension and all the great stuff im going to do.
But back to reality where I have a budget and a family to provide for. Brings me to my first question (I'm sure there will be many more)

What are budget friendly upgrades that someone who knows how to turn a wrench can handle? Let me be clear though I'm no mechanic.

I'm in the Elizabeth City area. Thinking about going to the OBX with the jeep but my 4wd currently isn't working. It worked when I bought it but the light was stuck on. I replaced the switch on the transfer case and now nothing. No light and No 4wd. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
