Newbie from NC & Florida

Hello to all. Just joined after buying a 97 Wrangler for our vacation home in Murphy, NC. Still don't know the designations...........YJ, CJ, etc but will learn with time. Had a 96 and 99 Grand Cherokees in the past. 96 was great, 99 was a disaster (quadra-drive explosion). Always wanted the wrangler but it just wasn't practical then............too small, noisy, drafty, rough ride...........yeah all the things that make them so much fun. Now, in semi-retirement, don't care about practical, just want fun.

This one is the basic 2.5 l 4 banger with auto (so the wife can drive it too). Has 101K miles and in really good shape in and out. Bought it from a local bike/jeep lot who takes Jeeps on consignment. Only problem I saw with it is the initial cold start where it idles great but won't drive off for about 5 minutes. It pukes, chokes, spits, bucks..............then drives like a dream. I read up on this a little. Consensus seems to indicate possibilities 1) upstream O2 sensor 2) MAF needs cleaning 3) cold idle air control 4) TPS circuit So I took it to the local Jeep dealer in Haynesville and let him figure it out while we're back in Florida for a few weeks or so. Normally, I'd do the work myself but our house in NC doesn't have tools like I have here in Florida (lift, jacks, sockets and wrenches, etc).

If anyone out there does any trail riding in our part of NC, let me know where and when. We're up there about one week every month or so. Normally, we live in Melbourne, Florida. I race SCCA SM events throughout the southeast and also run an 07 C6Z06 at various track events. I'd like to do some trail rides with the Jeep but no rock climbing or that kind of extreme stuff. Also, with the 2.5 liter 4 banger, power is a challenge.

Not yet, trying to set it up. I've run Barber and Roebling outside of Florida, Spring Mountain in NV. Everyone says Atlanta is the place to go so its on my list. Thanks.

Thanks for the greeting. I kinda figure the J is for Jeep.........so the T is for the code designation they put on that model ?? If I say I have a 97 TJ, does everyone know what I'm talking about ?

As to vacation homes in NC, the Murphy area is downright gorgeous. We looked in areas from Boone to Asheville, finally in Murphy. Murphy is closer to Florida, real estate values are down more in Murphy so the deals are better. However, to all NC people, the entire state is wonderful and people are very nice, very polite, very agreeable. If you want something done quickly, however, you're in the wrong state I've learned to kick back and just let life come is it may, at its own sweet pace. Hey, there are Jeeps everywhere up there. Jeeps and pickups. Hey, do you know what they call us up there............Floridiots

On that subject, how much trouble is it to get the soft top off, and for that matter, back on. I've mastered the doors, simply pull up and they're half doors. I saw the back window is zippered on and off, no problem other than starting the zipper back up. The guy I bought the TJ from said the top is a real pain for two people to put on or take off. Educate me !

It really depends on what top you have. OEM or aftermarket? There are a lot of videos on the forum showing how to do it properly.

Thanks, I'll do a search. Not sure if its OEM or aftermarket, but it being a 97, doubt very much its the original.
