Newbie looking for first time Jeep Camping trip south of Chicago

I've owned my 2000 Wrangler Sahara since 2001 but I've never really been off road with it to any extent. It's really not equipped for it since it just has the stock Sahara package (street tires, etc.)

That said, I'd like to take a camping trip with my 10 year old son around the end on October this year and I'd like to throw in some light off-roading in the Jeep. I'm thinking about heading south of Chicago (maybe up to 4 hours drive) to hit some warmer temps.

I'm looking for some light off road trails and tent camping sites. Any suggestions?

this place is great, camping right at the park, or another camp ground is seven miles away.

you'll be suprised what your stock wrangler can do. do you have any other jeep people goin with ya, its more fun with a few trucks.

i just went there with some guys on here, there's a thread on it somewhere. i took my 5 yr old son, it was our first father son camping trip. great time.

jpdocdave: Thanks for the suggestion! That looks like a great place to start. I think we might even rent a side by side for a day as well.

Any other suggestions?

Can't help you find a place to take your son, but glad you are along for the ride with us. This is the best Jeep Wrangler forum there is - hands down!
