nv3550 to 42re?

Have recently purchased a 1995 jeep grand cherokee (4.0L), and im wondering if it would be possible to swap the tranny into my 01' TJ that has the nv3550 now. Ive been driving long distances to work on the highway making the 3spd autos undesireable but maybe a 4spd would do the trick then my wife could drive it also. "How big of a nightmare would this be" Is it even a possibility?
I was hopin havin this 95 G.cherokee in the driveway would make things easier

The 42RE is just as terrible IMO. If you want a 4speed auto, do the work and install an AW4 from an XJ Cherokee.

thanks for the reply, I know the horror stories about this tranny, and I wouldn't be interested in doin this had I not came across the grand cherokee so cheap, Its still very driveable, I bought it for $500 after fixing another vehicle the guy had, very possibly worth 2-3 times that so I took on the job. So Im wanting to do this basically cause I have little use for the grand cherokee except for it having a auto trans I want in the TJ. If anyone has done this, what did you have to do, what will I have to do to make this work.

Mark up that Grand Cherokee and resell it. Take the profits and find another transmission.

AZTJ has suggested a very common swap. I'll second what he suggested. The 42RE sucks.

ok, when I locate the AW4 can someone tell me what other things at the junk yard I might grab to save me a few trips, this i guess would be the start of my researching. I gotta do this project now, the wife is all excited. Any info would be appreciated expecially from someone that has done this.

When pulling an AW4, pull the computer for it as well, should be in the console near the firewall. Take the wireharness and everything else. Might even be a good idea to take the throttlebody and kickdown cables as well. That's about all I can think of, but be sure to read this site...
