Popping out of gear between 2H and 4H

I have a 2000 Wrangler, automatic tranny, and like most of you, I've been driving in the snow for the past few days. I had it in 4H today, and the 4WD shifter popped out of gear a few times. Even though the transmission was still in drive, the 4WD shifter somehow popped into a middle position so that the Jeep was basically in neutral. I had to shift the tranny back to neutral, re-engage the 4WD shifter to 2H, then shift the tranny back into drive. Any ideas what's going on here?
