I just purchased a '97 Wrangler Sport yesterday. 133,000 miles, 4.0L with auto trans. It is still in stock form. It definitely needs some work, but I knew that going in. Now the project starts! Started yesterday, installed 2 new hood latches and a new fan knob (i know, very simple, but its a start, plus 1 of the hood latches was completely broke)
Body and paint are in great shape
5 brand new 31" BFG AT tires
Interior is in good shape, just needs a good cleaning
the soft top will need to be replaced (easy)
the check engine light is on, it tends to misfire at start and during idle. It shakes during idle (you can hear a rattling too, but I think that may be a bad catalytic converter)
a/c doesn't work (in Phoenix, that will be a problem in about 3 months)
gas gauge doesn't seem to be accurate, I filled it up yesterday, it read full, but after about 10 miles it dropped to 3/4 full
the transmission seems a little shaky
The previous owner had all the plugs changed last year. Thankfully I've got a few friends that run dealerships around here so they are going to help me as best they can.
This is my second Wrangler, first one was a '95 S that I had 10 years ago. I replaced that with a '96 Cherokee Country.
