Seriously considering getting a jeep

Hi everyone,

First off let me just say that I'm new to the forum. I currently am not an owner of a jeep, but I'm seriously considering it as I am well overdue for a new vehicle. I have a few questions that I would like to ask, since this looks like the place of many veteran jeep owners.
Right now I'm driving a '99 single cab ford ranger, would there be any drawbacks of using a jeep as my primary vehicle?

I've been looking at jeep's web site and I like the islander and mountain models. If I were to choose today I would get an islander or mountain with manual transmission and a soft top. What model would you recommend the most for a complete noob like myself?

What do you like least about driving a jeep?

Thanks in advanced, I look forward to your replies.

Cheers!

Seriously though, I can't think of a single reason. In fact I often drive my Jeep for absolutely no reason other than to cruise and enjoy the sweet ride with the top and doors off laughing inside at everyone else driving like idiots to get to wherever they're going as quickly as they can and get out of their boring cars.

When you get yours, don't forget to wave at us!

Oh, and welcome to the forum and hopefully soon to the family!!

I was in a similar spot about three weeks ago: needing a new vehicle with a back seat (to accommodate our 2nd child that we're expecting in a few months), still driving my regular cab Chevy Silverado, and longing for another convertible.

I landed on a Wrangler Unlimited because it was the only ride out there that offered me everything that I wanted in a new vehicle and ALSO gave me the added ability to go off-road

We found a used '10 4x4 Sport with all of the 'creature comforts' that my wife wanted and with only 3500 miles on the clock! So far, I've been having a BLAST with it!

My only gripes so far: 1) I wish it came with a better radio and 2) better gas mileage would be nice (though I'm averaging 3 or 4 mpg better than my old truck!).

I cant help you pick one or the other but I can tell you that you will LOVE being a Jeep owner. the only thing I dont like is all the money i WISH i had so i can add to it!!! there are so many things you want to do to it and with it. If you're driving a single cab ranger then you're going to love a Jeep, granted no bed but you'll have more room.....maybe esp if you get a 4 door!!!

Mine is a DD and I love it.. Couple of things to look out for:

With the soft top it WILL LEAK unlsee you follow the assembly instructions to the LETTER and some times that doesn't work and dont expect great mileage... You didn't say if you were looking at the 2d or 4d model, so I will say this (and probably get stoned) unless you are considering some heavy off roading, so with the 4d... more storage and better highway stablity as a DD.

Finally... DONT GET RID OF YOUR TRUCK.... I traded my truck and regret it as it is difficult getting a sofa in a Jeep

lol, we plan on keeping the truck (to haul our trash off and what not). So the soft tops generally leak? The mileage for a new jeep is about right on with my truck so that won't bother me.

Mine's an '09 and I haven't noticed the soft top leaking yet. Eventually ANY removable top will start leaking though.

I actually sold a ranger to get my Wrangler (granted its a 2001). But the only thing I miss is the larger bed.

but not enough for me to regret the purchase.

Everything is better in the Jeep, vs. the Ranger.
My 2001 top doesn't leak on me. apparently there's a small leak on the rear, but that's where the stitching is starting to pull through (its a 10 yr old top)

No leaks in my 05 and I've replaced the top (not because of it leaking but wanted a quieter Bestop sailcloth top).

Both my wife and I fight over who gets to drive the Jeep. I have to watch out cause a number of parents at her school comment, "oh your the teacher with the hot jeep".

I am certain you'll like the Jeep. They are gas guzzlers though.

About 18 hours from your OP. I'm thinking you had already decided, much like everyone else.

I've come to the conclusion there are two types of people in this world. People who own jeeps and people who want them.

So just about 3 years later, I finally got one! Brand new Wrangler Sahara. I just got it yesterday; so excited I couldn't sleep. I feel like a kid at Christmas. It's a manual transmission so I'll have to get used to that, so far so good.
