Slidell/Ruston, LA - 1998 Jeep Wrangler SE

Have frequented the site in the past but just recently became a member. Born and raised in Slidell, LA but go to school in Ruston, LA at Louisiana Tech University. Currently in my senior year as a nanosystems/mechanical engineering major. My Jeep was a high school graduation present in 2006 and will be with me until I (hopefully) had over the keys to my son as his graduation present. I do all the "wrenching" myself which has included the installation (and un-installation) of a 4" suspension lift, all regular maintenance, 2 winches (avoid Mile Marker in my opinion), in cab winch controls, and various other small modifications. Some up coming modifications include homemade bumpers, homemade highline fenders, toolbox, jump seats, and few others that will help out off road. Well that's about it (seeing as how I started out with a "just a few lines" attitude.

Respectfully,

Taylor Woodham

Also, if any Delta Chi's (or any Greeks really) read this, shoot me a message, its nice to mix up the Jeep topic with a few frat stories!

Hey Taylor. I'm from mandeville and now Nola. Question for u: I'm going to test drive some jeeps at lakeshore chrysler In Slidell. If I like what I see do u have a mechanic in Slidell that u would recommend to look at it for me? Looking at an 06 6-speed 4cyl they have.

Thanks!

As far as mechanics, It's been my dad and I since day 1 hahaha. The old girl has been kind though, regular maintenance with a few easy to hit curveballs along the way (axle shaft assembly, wheel bearings, etc.). The only thing I would comment on would be the engine. If given the option between the 4 and 6, I would probably go 6. Now don't get me wrong (as I own a 4 cyl and love her to death), the 4 is a perfectly capable engine, just slightly underpowered in my opinion(5th gear gets lonely anytime I pull any sort of load hahaha). And with the MPG's between the 4 and 6 being almost identical, the only plus really is a slight weight reduction up front (and of course 2 less cylinders to mess up!). But hey, as in my case, if it's the right price at the right time, you just can't go wrong with a Jeep!

Hahaha! Your co-worker NAILED it! And believe me, I've had the pleasure of knowing a few of the "rest" that he's talking about!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!

Thanks for the advice. I think I'm probably going to want the I6. It's a 6-speed....I was surprised to see that on a wrangler.....I've only seen that on sporty cars.

There's a blk on blk 4cyl in Lafayette, 06 with low miles but price varies so much from the 06 4cyl I'm goig to see in Slidell. I've found prices are all over the place here and I can't pin down what's a good price.

On with the search....

I've been out of the market so long I'm not sure on a good price. I know when I got mine in 2006 (keeping in mind that it's a '98) it had 49k miles on it and we paid $7500 for it.

Kelly blue book whatever your looking at. My 06 lj was right at 15k. Bought it 8 mos ago from a dealer. It blue booked for 15 so I didn't feel bent over. Tj's should be cheaper, I believe I saw some around 10-12k. Also, 05's are the same so open yourself up to different options. Some differences for 03/04 but nothing major. 02 and before will be the cheapest option.

Well the two I wanted to test drive sold! so I went to the dealership and test drove one that's way outta my price range.. 07 9k miles manual v6 (no more i6 after 06) with a hard top that is like t-tops! So I could partially remove myself.
It was gorgeous and smooth, tight feel. The 1st jeep I test drove was totally different: 02 manual i6 but too much play...like I could easily tip over.
But the 07 was NICE!!!!
The dealership will be on the look out for what want ....just gotta wait some more. I'm not looking at anything but i6s no 4s. I may take my search to Houston ,much larger selection.
Wish me luck and thanks again for the advice
