staring issues

my jeep died in a parking lot and i could only get a clicking sound when turning the key. i was able to jump start it to get it home but could not jump it after that no matter how many times i tried. i purchased a new battery and put it in but had very dim lights and the engine wouldnt even turn. my first thought was a bad connection and i found a wire that hooks up to the fuses next to battery. its a grey connector piece and when i messed with it the lights got very bright and i thought i fixed the problem. i tried to start it again and it seems like the engine will keep turning but wont start up any ideas what this could be i really need some help.
