Thinking about buying a wrangler...

Hello everyone! I just moved to the Texas San Antonio area and I have been researching a new vehicle to buy while I am down here. I am originally from Michigan and I wanted to escape the cold!! I just sold my 2004 Mazda 3s Sport, and I have been captivated by jeeps the last few months while thinking of a new vehicle. I know, its quite a jump from a Mazda 3, but I want to go out and check out western Texas in style. So my question to all of you experienced jeep enthusiasts is, what should I know about jeeps before buying? I know how to do most mainenance myself so thats not a biggie, but I want to know more about common problems on jeeps and what models they are common for. For instance, I heard that 1999 TJs are NOT a good jeep to buy, they have common rust and electrical problems. I also heard that the 1995 YJ models are great to buy. Are these things true/any basis for them?

My price range is up to $8,000. What can I afford, what should I look for? And if I do go test drive some jeeps, what are the things I should be looking for so I know bad signs when I see them?

Thanks a ton!

You know you drive a TJ when you have the parts for the mod, the right tools for the job, a BFH & still need a Sawzall to get the job done!

Mainly look underneath to make sure it wasn't rode hard and put away wet, to use a western term.

Welcome to the Forum

You could possibly pick up an early TJ for 8g.
Rust shouldn't be an issue, but check the usual places just to be sure.
I always recommend that you buy as close to stock as possible. The heavily modifieds may look great but there is a greater chance that they have been driven hard and you never really know exactly what has been modded or if it was done properly. Start with stock and build it the way you want it.

If the jeep is from Texas there shouldn't be a rust issue. You need water for rust!
