Towing my Wrangler

I have a 2010 Wrangler that I just put a tow bar on so I can tow it behind my Motorhome. My owners manual says to leave the key in accessory mode and to disconnect the battery when towing. Is that necessary as the steering wheel has no lock anyway. I of course know to leave transfer case on neutral but just don't understand why I would leave the key on and disconnect the battery? Can anyone help me understand this?

You turn the key to accessory to unlock the wheel so it can turn while being towed. My dad found out the hard way what happens when you don't unlock the wheel in the form of two new tires.

Its possible the JKs don't have an unlocked position, so they tell you to put it to acc to unlock the wheel and then pull the batter cable to not drain the battery.

Me too

I have the same question Sojo.
We just bought the 2012 Sport Unlimited.
I posted the question in RV.Net. The concensus is Jeep stopped putting the lock on the steering wheel for the 09 model year but never got around the changing the instruction manula on RV towing.

Hi, Welcome to the Forum!
I have a 2012 JKU that I am planning to Tow behind my MH as well. The locking steering column ended in 2008 or 2009 so towing should not be affected by the Key, that also means there is no fuse to pull to stop an electrical drain.
You might want to check out this Forum 1RV2.com/forums there is very good info on Towing Jeeps. I have bought a Currie Industries base plate made for the JK series Jeeps. It will accept Blue Ox and other Tow Bars at $199. it is good quality and inexpensive compared to others.
