Trying to decide on YJ or TJ??

I am brand new here and I am getting ready to buy a Wrangler. I live in HOTT and HUMID Central Florida.

I am trying to decide what to get. I planned on getting a YJ, but have noticed that nice ones go for about the same as some TJs. So I am trying to not only figure out why, but decide if I should just go with a newer jeep.

The vehicle will be a 2 or 3 day a week driver for my wife for a year or so(her current BMW convertible is quickly approaching 100k), so we need an auto, 6 cylinder. We also plan on towing a boat eventually and once the wife gets her new car I will be taking over and playing with it.

I will have about $10k to spend total, but to find one for considerably less would allow us to get our boat quicker. I am looking at some YJs that need work for less than $3k.

What are the pros and cons of each style?

welcome...if you want an auto 6 cylinder and plan on towing some then you may want to go with a tj...but then again a yj isn't that bad either...but if your wife is gonna need it then i would probably get a tj because they have a/c and i am sure that your wife would want a/c especially since your in florida...you should be able to find a tj for under $10k

I wouldn't tow a very big boat with YJ or TJ. It can be done but a real pain...

If your 90% off road they both will fix up great. $$$$$
If you spend some time on the road get the TJ

that is kind of risky towing the boat..
the jeep wont have any problem pulling it
it is the stopping that would worry me

Hey, Newbies! Most YJs have A/C and do well on the road. Mine has 108,000 miles and doesn't leak a drop of anything and runs just the way it did years ago. It also has cold air and even a radio. It runs on gasoline and not coal as you think. You don't have to put your feet out the bottom like the Flintstones to get it moving either. Man! Be informed instead of mis-informing.

The thing I would suggest is go out and test drive as many as you can. You'll be able to tell which best suits you.

I would not want to tow much of anything with either Jeep. Find a Jeep with the best A/C, and go with that. If your wife has to drive it, she will certainly appreciate the well working A/C. You won't find much of a Jeep for 3K, either way. Get your priorities straight, then do your shopping.

lol..most of the yj's i've seen don't have a/c...including my buddies yj...maybe it's just the older ones but i've seen many without

My 89 YJ had A/C, but I had that all removed, when I dropped in the Chevy 350, as it is not essential for wheeling. At low speeds, no A/C works very well. No need for unnecessary drag on engine performance.

You know the ones without ac also don't have much heat. That blower motor that comes stock wouldn't heat a thimble!

OK things have changed. Now I am looking for a bargain jeep. Still looking for a 6 cylinder with a/c(its hot and humid here in FL, you neeeeeeed a/c most of the time). Auto or 5 speed is ok. The price will be under 4k though. I dont mind doing a little work on it though. In fact I intend to. I dont plan on having that big of a boat to tow.

The wife told me that she wont drive the Wrangler if she still has the BMW sitting in the garage, so now we are splitting the funds between a Wrangler and a more family oriented BMW. I am selling my Porsche.

So it looks like a YJ is the way to go. What is the differances in the years? I have owned a 93 and 95 4 cylinder without a/c. I am looking at an 88 6 cylinder auto. Let me know the pros and cons here.

That is why I don't own either one of them. Spend more on maintenance than Jeep payments. Building my YJ cost more than most BMW's........but I would still rather have my Jeep.

Me too, but my wife has a different outlook on life.

I can't say that I don't enjoy taking the bimmer out on the open road, or into the ozarks on those winding, curvy roads and putting it through its paces. It's just a different rush than offroading.

Get a 91 or newer YJ, have fuel injection on the 6 cyl. makes life much nicer.

I agree. Also, do yourself a favor.Try it out thoroughly in 4 wheel before you buy. I've seen too many that the 4 wheel has issues do to vacuum line problems. I believe you should be able to find a nice YJ for not too much deniro, if you find the right deal.

Be leary of Jeeps that have been lifted also. There's alot of good work that's been done to lift Jeeps, but there's a lot of sketchy work too. Like I said, get a mechanic to look it over and don't be afraid of high mileage. That 6 cyl is just getting broken in when it 100,000.

Speakin' of beaches, I haven't mentioned my trip to the gulf coast, have I? I went down there for business this past week. It's unbelievable to see all the houses and buildings just wiped off the face of the planet. What you see on TV just doesn't bring it into perspective. I was going to take some pictures and post them, but I actually couldn't find anything to get a shot of. I couldn't describe it. It's something you really would have to see.

OK so I have a 83 Porsche that I paid $3000 and have put another $400 into with a new set of seats and timing belt and rear wheel bearings. It has 130k on it. Very cheap to work on and never breaks. The 99 BMW 328i Convertible was $10,300 a year and a half ago with 63000 on the clock and the only thing I had to do before it hit 100,000 was tires and oil changes. At 100,000 I replaced the brakes at a cost of $240 including pads and rotor all the way around with high performance stuff(not because they were bad, but because they were leaving my rims black all the time), tuned it up(6 bosch plugs and a fuel filter bought at the local Advance auto parts), changed all the fluids, and installed a full M3 suspension and exhaust(again not because it needed it, but for better performance).

So to say they are expensive in any way is foolish if you have never owned one. The key is never use a BMW dealer for anything. The Porsche dealer is very reasonable though.

The wife had a Lincoln Navigator before that(yeah a glorified expensive Ford). We were paying $500 a month and when it hit over 60k it starting costing us an average of $700 more per month to keep it running. (transmission, coils, fuel pump, injectors, and the motor was knocking and rear end was starting to whine when we traded it, all before 80k, and I am pretty anal about maintanance, so that was not it)

My sister had a 04 Chrysler Sebring and at about 45k it starting breaking down about once a month with some sort of coolant or overheating issue. She spent over $5000 on it over the course of the next 8000 miles to keep it on the road then she finally traded it.

So to me it looks like a Ford or Chrysler product costs much more money to keep on the road than my BMW or Porsche.

I have owned 2 4 cylinder Wranglers with over 100k and both ran great. The only problem I had was broken transfer cases on each, and I bought them that way. One was obviously busted on a tree or rock or something, the other one just wore out. So I am hoping the one I get is as reliable.

The wife wants a 4 door Saab. Now that scares me, but for what a low mileage 4 door BMW costs I can get a boat, Jeep and her Saab, so we will just keep the BMW around in case the Saab breaks. It is just easier for the kid to get in.

Is the carb really that bad? I was thinking about installing a performance intake and carb possibly. I am looking at an 88 that needs some work. I like tinkering with cars, but still want a reliable ride in the end.

It's just not what you want if you go off road and put it at angles where FI would be more beneficial. If you are not doing extreme hill climbs or a lot of rock crawling the carb will be fine. As long as you like to tinker.

Isnt there any performance carbs or intakes for the early 6 cylinders? THe one I am looking at needs at least a carb.

OK so over 4 years later and a Z28 with over 500hp, then a CJ5 with way too much power and no amenities, a Saab 9-5 V6 turbo(all sold now), a Trailblazer EXT V8(tow vehicle and wife's DD) and I finally have a nice clean 95 YJ with a/c and a 4.0l. It took a while but I got what I was looking for.

While I am reluctant to buy a YJ for carb reasons, and the difficulty to get parts, am I reading correctly that 91 and on has fuel injection? I am curious, because a co-worker owns a 95 4 cylinder. And maybe he was not listening, but he said his had a carb. When the time comes to buy another Jeep, I may only be to afford an older Wrangler.
